Moderator One Armed Boxer Posted August 8, 2021 Moderator Share Posted August 8, 2021 This is tough as I admittedly need to see more of both of their filmographies (I've probably seen more than 30 of each of their movies, which for many actor may be a whole filmography, but not for anyone that was a star in 80's Hong Kong!). For now though I'll go with - Andy Lau: 1. Running on Karma 2. Saving Mr. Wu 3. Infernal Affairs 4. Bloody Brotherhood 5. Magic Crystal Tony Leung Chiu-Wai: 1. In the Mood for Love 2. Chungking Express 3. Bullet in the Head 4. Hero 5. Lust, Caution

They appeared together in a couple of TVB series during the early to mid 80's including "Duke of Mount Deer" - breakthrough role for Tony Leung Chiu Wai and "The Yang's Saga (full story of 8 Diagram Pole Fighter)." Andy Lau List: 1. Infernal Affairs (1 & 3) 2. As Tears Go By 3. A Moment of Romance 4. A True Mob Story 5. TIE: Love on a Diet, Blind Detective, Needing You, Yesterday Once More (his Johnnie To/ Sammi Cheng collaborations) Tony Leung Chiu Wai List: 1. Hard Boiled 2. Chungking Express 3. People's Hero 4. Ashes of Time (The original not the terrible Redux) 5. Red Cliff (1 & 2)
Member Writ Posted August 11, 2021 Member Share Posted August 11, 2021 I haven't seen nearly enough of either of their films (15 of Leung and 24 of Lau), so my list would easily look different this time next year. But for now (in no real orders for the films): Andy Lau: 1. The Warlords 2. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame 3. Running Out of Time 4. Shaolin 5. God of Gamblers Tony Leung Chiu Wai: 1. Hero 2. Red Cliff Part 1 & 2 3. My Heart is that Eternal Rose 4. The Longest Nite 5. In the Mood for Love
Member CharlieParker Posted September 8, 2021 Member Share Posted September 8, 2021 (edited) Andy Lau: 1. A Moment of Romance - such an important film at the time, ushering in a new more stylised way of making film - all on what's obviously a very low budget. Fans of the soundtrack (which was also a huge part of its popularity) take note that it does actually exist! You can grab the CD for around 16 euros but the vinyl edition is a whopping 350 euros! (and the previous one sold for 84 euros) https://www.discogs.com/Beyond-15-袁鳳瑛-天若有情-電影歌曲-A-Moment-Of-Romance-Original-Soundtrack/release/12603717 2. Rich & Famous/Tragic Hero (yeah, I'm cheating...) Some people's poor cousin to Woo's A Better Tomorrow - nothing beats seeing the finale to Tragic Hero in a packed cinema - notably the part when they start loading up the grenade launchers in the final reel. On the one hand it's obvious what they're cashing-in on, but it still stands up on its own merits - and I thought both were great when viewed as a whole. 3. Casino Tycoon 1&2 - Caught these on the big screen with zero idea of what to expect - "Wong Jing does the Godfather" (as only he can) just about sums them up. This is when Wong Jing really hit his stride accompanied with some really big budgets. 4. Lee Rock 1&2 - Same as above... although part 2 never had subs which was a pisser... Still, the first sync-sound film and some really solid performances all round. It's also a wonderful celebration of police corruption and triads that really does reflect the times it was made in. (So much so that the triads allegedly nicked the master copies and held them to ransom... iirc?) 5 Saviour of the Soul - I think i saw this at least three times at the cinema on its initial Chinatown release - it was featured on at least one or two double-bills that were popular back then. Like A Moment of Romance, this one (imho) really kicked HK film production up a gear (or two) Almost entirely shot in a studio and oozing with style. I haven't seen it for years but I remember it as, essentially, one very long, incredibly stylised fight scene. Tony Leung Chiu Wai 1. Bullet in the Head 2. People's Hero (reading this thread reminded me of this one - I remember it really standing out at the time but I can't remember much more!? I need to revisit this one... 3. Days of Being Wild 4 Chung King Express 5. My Heart is that Eternal Rose (same as People's Hero - identical memory, great film that stood out from the rest at the time... but I don't remember the film now. In my defence, it has been around 30 years since I saw it Scanning his filmography not much else really leaps out - although I remember The Lunatics is a great (and gritty) early new wave film and Days of Being Dumb was actually a really decent comedy. Member Sheng Posted September 12, 2021 Member Share Posted September 12, 2021 (edited) @charlie parker The LEE ROCK films, a cool mention, as they're both important, but rarely mentioned parts of Lau's filmography. Just as with A MOMENT OF ROMANCE, you could tell he really turned into a serious actor by this time. Not just pretty boy acrobatics as in MAGIC CRYSTAL and way too many of his early films (unless he was tutored by directors like Ann Hui). But no subs for LEE ROCK II ? Dunno what you refer to, the Vicol BD and the old Panorama DVD box set had fairly decent subs (by HK standards).
