Member Iron_Leopard Posted August 1, 2021 Member Share Posted August 1, 2021 It's no secret these were dark years for the Hong Kong film industry which pretty much peaked in 93/94. If you check out a list of every hong kong movie released by year on wikpedia you'll see theres not a lot of good to pick from. So what's your pick? 97: 98: 99:
Member DiP Posted August 2, 2021 Member Share Posted August 2, 2021 (edited) Actually, there were quite a handful of good movies that were produced in those years. It's just that most of those movies were not martial arts movies, the most well-known genre outside of Hong Kong/Asia, which at that point was declining. I would say Hong Kong cinema in the late 90s were dominated by crime movies. Favorite HK movie of 1997: Full Alert (Worthy mentions: Too Many Ways To Be No. 1, The Odd One Dies, Legend of the Wolf) Favorite HK movie of 1998: The Longest Nite (Worthy mentions: A Hero Never Dies, Beast Cops, Expect the Unexpected) Best HK movie of 1999: The Mission (Worthy mentions: Running Out of Time, Bullets Over Summer, Victim, Where a Good Man Goes) Edited August 2, 2021 by DiP

Member Cognoscente Posted August 2, 2021 Member Share Posted August 2, 2021 1998 was probably the best year out of the three when you also factor in Stanley Kwan's Hold You Tight.

Member DiP Posted August 2, 2021 Member Share Posted August 2, 2021 (edited) Totally forgot about Ballistic Kiss... That movie is too overlooked. It contains very little fighting and more gunfights but what impresses me most about the movie is the overall style in details. It's like Donnie watched a Wong Kar-Wai movie and decided to mimic the cinematography style, and throw in conventional story elements of misunderstanding, double-crossing, characteristics etc. The combination was unlike anything I'd seen before, and made me realize that Donnie can actually direct. I hope he goes back to that, maybe after he retires from acting. Edited August 3, 2021 by DiP
