Member starschwar Posted May 20, 2021 Member Share Posted May 20, 2021 70s: Snake in the Eagle's Shadow. It's got heart, great fights, the right amount of humor, and young Jackie at his pre-injury prime. Beautifully made, especially with the original soundtrack that borrowed from Johnny Harris, etc. 80s: Certainly his best stretch, very hard to choose between so many classics. I'll go with Police Story, though. An action masterpiece. 90s: Drunken Master II, all the way. Implausible age-related casting issues aside, it has some of his all-time best action scenes. Brilliant choreography, coupled with a very strong musical score. I've seen more than a few posters here describe it as his last classic. And while there are things that he made after that I enjoy a lot, I'm really inclined to agree. This was a level of quality he never quite reached again. 2000s: New Police Story: A lot more dramatic than expected, but it works very well. He has a good dynamic with his main costar. It's surprisingly touching sometimes. I still gripe about it being a needless reboot. In my mind, this is the final chapter for Chan Ka-Kui and May. 2010s: CZ12/Chinese Zodiac/Armour of God 3: He still had it. After all those years and all that damage to his body, he could still do those sorts of things, and that's just mind-blowing. The plot is preposterous, and at times entirely too silly even for this type of movie (those pirates!). But whenever Jackie's doing his thing, it's like the 90s never ended. Would have been a great one to retire on, but I'm glad he's still going all the same.
Member starschwar Posted May 20, 2021 Member Share Posted May 20, 2021 Is there no edit button on this forum? Sorry for the double-post. But I'd be remiss for failing to mention that Anita Mui was absolutely perfect as Wong Fei-Hung's stepmother in Drunken Master II. She and Jackie had a hilarious dynamic that - if not for the aforementioned show-stopping fight scenes - is almost the highlight of the movie.

Member starschwar Posted May 20, 2021 Member Share Posted May 20, 2021 I'm surprised to see a few Lo Wei era movies make people's lists. I haven't seen them since the days of Simitar's LP-mode VHS - and was left unimpressed. For a long time, I was of the opinion that nothing Jackie starred in prior to SITES was any good. I look forward to revisiting them via their 88 Films releases in the future. Maybe there were some gems back then, hidden behind the awful picture quality, etc. The Foreigner - I didn't dislike it, but I found it to be.... maybe the best description I can give is "aggressively average." There was nothing bad, but also nothing really stood out to me as captivating or memorable either. Jackie turned in a decent dramatic performance, but it was hardly his first. I think I was just expecting a lot more from the collaboration with Pierce Brosnan and Martin Campbell.

Well, it is the ONLY Lo Wei JC movie I like, and not having to sit through The Canto Comedy Hour with special guest star, Dean Shek, puts it ahead of SITES and DM for me.

The quality of the American Jackie is very embarrassing, but he continues to make them by following those examples. with Kung fu Yoga it has improved ...
