Shaw Brothers gorgeous sets

Randy

Recommended Posts

First-time poster here at Kung Fu Fandom.  Please be patient with me if this statement is elementary to you all.   I've enjoyed Shaw Brothers movies for years (my favorite ones are the most outrageous ones to my Western eyes).   But no matter what the plot or subject matter of these tales of swords and Kung Fu,  Shaw always seems to fill the eyes with beautiful costumes and sets.  It just adds so much more pleasure to this stories.

Questions for anyone to answer:

1-How was Shaw able to build such elaborate sets?

2-Did Shaw set designers get screen credit?

3-Which Shaw movies to you think have the most beautiful sets?

Thank you for welcoming me to your forum;

Randy

Welcome.

This thread is a great idea. Most of the time, at the end of the movies (or the beginning), some credits are only in Chinese, so, who knows if the set designers got credits or not. The same goes to the singers. I don' t remember to have ever seen any mention of Tsin Ting as the singer in any of the musical Shaws...

Welcome to the board, Randy! Apart from everything else - and there is a lot - I too think that Shaw movies are amazing eye candy.

In their heyday, the Shaw Brothers were the largest film production company in Hong Kong or even whole Asia, they had their own training classes for acting and also for all sorts of work behind the camera. Successful as they were, they could afford to employ specialists, artists, craftsmen to create beautiful settings, costumes, etc.

Here are two sites with lots of info on the Shaw Brothers Studio:

I truly can't decide which set I like the most, there are just too many. I just know it will most probably be a Chu Yuan wuxia setting.

Thank you Chu Liu Hsiang,  I'm humbled by your knowledge of the Shaw Brothers Studio. You are all giving this American fan a great education.
