Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 What's your favorite Shaw set(s)? I have way too many, but my number one is the fisherman's place by the riverside from Five Super Fighters. It's featured in other films as well, but always loved how it looked here, especially with the staff fight at sunset. Also really like the drunken cripples hut, the crane lady's house by the waterfall and the master's house in the bamboo grove, all from the same film. Though the fisherman place is my fave. I'll post more later.... feel free to chime in, and throw in pics if possible.
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 Another good one is the riverside gazebo with the pagoda in the distance from The Killer... very romantic. 7

Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) Find this fountain set in "Sunset" kinda charming, though not super convincing. Edited July 12, 2020 by TibetanWhiteCrane
Member paimeifist Posted July 12, 2020 Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 Awesome thread. I can’t really think of one in particular. I recently watched Valley of the Fangs and there was an awesome set with a gazebo over water, with bridges going to it connecting to a walkway on the outside of a surrounding building.

Yeah, think they use that one in multiple films as they do with so many of their indoor sets. Though I personally never get tired of looking at them.

Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 The redressed fishermans set from Five Super Fighters, now a rural, run-down mill in Kid With a Tattoo where Yun Wah fights Yuen Bun.

If that's the same set I'm thinking of, it's also in Clan of Amazons, among others as @TibetanWhiteCrane pointed out. I have to rewatch Valley of the Fangs. 2 hours ago, TibetanWhiteCrane said: I could live in one. There are some Chor Yuen cave sets that would be amazing to live in. 1 hour ago, TibetanWhiteCrane said: I realize this is some deep nerd shit, but I love the Shaw sets with a passion. There are some great ones. I was just watching / listening for the first time to the commentary track on the IVL Come Drink With Me DVD with Cheng Pei Pei, her daughter and Bey Logan, and she mentions really liking the sets in that film. She especially points out the large temple set and Yueh Hua's home set. Interesting take-away from that commentary was that Bey Logan really didn't know as much as I thought he did and he made a ton of mistakes corrected by Cheng Pei Pei. I believe he learned much that you hear him talk about in later commentaries after he did this one, which I think was his first for Shaw/Celestial DVD reissues. Certainly it was the first released. 5 hours ago, TibetanWhiteCrane said: my number one is the fisherman's place by the riverside from Five Super Fighters. They seem similar, but it may just be because they are next to a river and have a shack and a tree.

And no, I blieve that was a smaller fishing hut, but a great set as well.

Kind of glad in a way, because I can still watch them.

Not enough storage space in the ol' noggin' for all those wuxia shenanigans.
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) Descendant of the Sun is not only an insane and entertaining ride, but the set and model work is truly top tier. Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 12, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 12, 2020 A couple of atmospheric ones from Bastard Swordsman. The underwater musical set from Blue Skies. The street set and stormy desert set from Dirty Ho. A nice riverside hut set from Journey of the Doomed... the only good thing about that movie. Psychedelic stage set from King Drummer. Some stunning sets from Lady Assassin. The mountain training retreat from Mad Monkey Kung Fu. A couple of moody snow sets from Pursuit. The Tien family garden from Shaolin Mantis. A real foggy beauty from Swordsman and Enchantress. 60's fashion show decor from Torrent of Desire. The deadly hi-tec vault from Winners Take All.

IMO reusing familiar sets is part of their charm. Same goes for music and dubbing voice actors. Plus almost as if it were a game I enjoy thinking: Where have I seen that set? Heard that music? Who is that dubber?
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted July 13, 2020 Author Member Share Posted July 13, 2020 Agreed... to a point. There's something to be said for familiarity, as long as it doesn't slide over into monotony. I think They were wise to shut down in '85... it was a great ride, but it was over. Only wish the actual studio grounds had not been abandoned and left in tatters like that. Should have been transformed into a cinema museum.... but that's HK for ya'.
