The character, created by Mars Ravelo, revolves around a young woman named Narda, who is given a special crystal which allows her to become the superheroine Darna. De Leon replaces Angel Locsin, who left when the project was first announced in 2015. While training for the film, Locsin suffered an injury to her back and development/production was halted. Four years later, producers have selected De Leon to take on the titular role. The film co-stars former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. Locsin played the role in a 2005 series version of the character. After Locsin's departure, Liza Soberano was set to take on the titular role with Locsin's blessing. That is, until Soberano suffered an injury on the set of her TV series "Bagani". Her departure coincided with the departure of original director Erik Matti (Buy Bust). Jerrold Tarog replaced Matti as director and Soberano officially left the project due to the injury she sustained, which limited the motion of her hand. This past July, De Leon was officially chosen as Darna and production had finally begun. De Leon now follows in the footsteps of Rosa del Rosario, Liza Moreno, Eva Montes, Vilma Santos (perhaps the most famous film star to don the costume), Rio Locsin, Nanette Medved, and Anjanette Abayari to don the iconic costume on the big screen. https://www.rappler.com/entertainment/news/110738-angel-locsin-leaves-darna-movie https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/07/17/19/timeline-passing-on-darnas-stone-to-jane-de-leon
