Now, I'm sure the much maligned Dean Shek will get a good few votes. I'd give him top marks for Master Rocking in The Odd Couple, he's almost unbearable to watch in that one.

However,  I was watching Executioners From Shaolin again and this fella definitely gives Dean a run for his money

He spends the first 3rd of the film rather creepily obsessed with Chen Kuan Tai going to bed with his new wife and if I remember correctly plays a similar character in Heroes of the East where he is rather fixated on Gordon Lui's Japanese wife.

So which actors or characters make you want to scratch your eyes out?

Dean Shek is in his own class, nobody else comes close...

Never liked much fan mei sheng and too bad he is in several early swordplay shaw movies. At his best he is ok but too often find his characters too arrogant and some overacting is done too...

Dean really does take the crown.

I always wondered did Hong Kong audiences find him funny. Like were there folk pissing themselves laughing at his performances or were they just as tortured as us westerners.

Even in A Better Tomorrow 2 you want to slap him lol

For dean sheks defense his characters were not scripted to be liked but instead hated/loathed...and in that department he certainly did earn his paycheck. His performance never left cold😛. He had some good roles in more serious flicks at early 70s but unfortunately when watch those movies start to think then his frustrating characters in kung fu comedies...

Have to believe hk audience indeed wanted such thing as his list of movies of playing annoying creep is too long.

Of ladies worst is maybe Candy Wen...She is not bad in every movie but more often than not she definitely is. Stubborn and silly girl is often her role. 2 champions of shaolin is her finest I can think now...

Dean Shek had more serious roles in Ambush, Lady of the law, The deadly knives, The bravest fist and maybe other ones that I didn't watch as yet and he did well in these movies, that saves him a little bit...And in addition to that, he has some good fights, even in his comedic roles, such in Dirty tiger and crazy frog and another one with Sammo (I do'nt remember the title)...

Very interesting thread. I usually go by if the movie sucks as a whole. If there's one character that is cringe it doesn't bother me that much.  I can look past that.

Dean's in some of what I consider some of the greatest kung fu films ever made, Warriors Two, Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagles Shadow etc but you can't help but wish he just wasn't there.

I've never seen him play a serious character other than A Better Tomorrow 2, I'll need to look out those other ones mentioned.

I was jut looking at Dean Shek's pictures on hkmdb, and, according to a reviewer, if seems that he has a role of a bad guy with good fights in Mantis fists and tiger claws.

I'd highly recommend that movie, it's extremely violent and contains elements of folk horror, rape and revenge and traditional martial arts. One of the many great forgotton treasures.

Wu Te-Shan playing Oddball Lu in Snake & Crane Art's of Shaolin(1978). I used to like his cursing character, but his voice in the English dub really grated on me when I caught the recent Blu-Ray by 88 Film's. He's stil not on the same level as Dean Shek in the likes of Master with Cracked Fingers(1979).

The first movie where I saw him play it straight, was Bravest Fist(1974) co-starring alongside Chan Wai-Man and Sumeno Yukio. He did a pretty decent job in two, playing an undercover cop.

Also in "the protectors"...excellent movie with Lo Lieh, stolen gold from escort company and doublecrosses...very well worth checking out. And as far as I know shortest running time in Shaw, barely over hour.

Dean Shek was brilliant in A Better Tomorrow II. His character in "My Life is on the Line" was so unnecessary, the studio should have just cut it out entirely.

Eric Tsang's role in Crazy Couple(1979), in drag with one of the most grating character voices in the English dub catalogue. That was often used for the more annoying character's. What makes Tsang's role even worse, is he's pair up as the odd love interest to Dean Shek's character. I wrote a of this one, and have since tried to (un-successfully) erase it from my memory.

Don't forget that Shek was also the lead in Tsui Hark's 1991 movie 'The Raid', which was for the most part a serious role.

Together with his role as Interpreter Wu in Fist of Fury, he does have a special place in cinema history as the annoying guy who taunts Bruce Lee... :)
