There is an American movie poster with that "shot" of Zatoichi as a drawing.  It's reprinted on the back of an early issue of Martial Arts Movie Associates(from 1985 IIRC) as the newspaper ad for a double bill with FURY OF THE DRAGON.

Fills in the details.  https://mubi.com/notebook/posts/the-deuce-notebook-the-samurai-cinema-slaughter-of-74

Surprisingly there's an English dub for Yojimbo.

(I know this isn't about Zatoichi, but still there has been discussions in this thread about other Japanese swordplay movies, so I thought it might be worth mentioning here.)

According to IMDB  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055630/trivia?item=tr6410449:

Quote

Given an English Dub from Seneca International by Peter Riethof, which premiered at the Kimo Theatre in Kansas City.

Here's a sample:

Personally I didn't like the dub that much the first time I watched it, but still it grew on me the second time.

Not too surprising it has English credits:

What's more interesting is that there's some additional text that gives info about the era in which the movies set:

I wouldn't be surprised if GH prepared a dub for Zatoichi meets One Armed Swordsman.

I noticed on the Wikipedia page for Frontier Enterprises, it gives them credit for the Yojimbo dub.

Frontier Enterprises does seem to be known for dubbing Japanese movies, whereas Peter Riethof is more known for dubbing European movies.

That citation is from Stuart Galbraith IV's notoriously unreliable book, which also claims the absolutely-dubbed-in-HK export dub of Honda's The War of the Gargantuas was handled by Frontier, which it is demonstrably not. I won't discount the possible existence of a Yojimbo export dub, but just take that example with a grain of salt.

The copy of the dub you have was also my encode hahaha. It's from a bootleg DVD I downloaded off of ADC (RIP) back in the day that syncs audio from the dubbed Embassy VHS to the video of the first Criterion disc.

Cool, I literally watched that version with my parents this evening.

I'm wondering whether I should change the title to something like; Rare/Lost English dubs of Japanese movies? Because I thought it might be worth mentioning yet another Japanese swordplay movie, that's not Zatoichi.

Earlier today @Chorake/SpaceHunterM⚧ uploaded credits for Seven Samurai, which are from a dubbed US TV version, see the video description for more info:

I accidentally overlooked this but, @Chorake/SpaceHunterM also uploaded a few seconds dialogue from the dub:
