Defenders of the warehouse held out against numerous waves of Japanese forces and covered Chinese forces retreating west during the Battle of Shanghai. The successful defense of the warehouse provided a morale-lifting consolation to the Chinese army and people in the demoralizing aftermath of the Chinese invasion of Shanghai. The warehouse's location just across the Suzhou Creek from the foreign concessions in Shanghai meant the battle took place in full view of the western powers... The Japanese did not dare to call naval artillery strikes on the area, since a stray shot might land in the concessions and provoke an incident with the Europeans and Americans, whom the Japanese wanted to keep out of the war... In Chinese, the 423 defenders are known as the Eight Hundred Heroes, because commander Xie Jinyuan not wanting to reveal their true strength to the Japanese provided an exaggerated number to girl guide Yang Huimin to announce to the public." Ko Chun-hsiung (Rich and Famous) played commander Xie Jinyuan. Brigitte Lin played the girl guide. The cast also included Hsu Feng (Dragon Gate Inn), Sylvia Chang (Aces Go Places series), Chin Han (The Heroic Ones), and Carter Wong. From Wikipedia: Eight Hundred Heroes. [The Eight Hundred], produced by Huayi Brothers with a lavish budget of over $80 million, is the first Chinese action film shot entirely on Imax cameras, and it is expected become one of the country's biggest event movies of the summer when it opens wide July 5." Member Drunken Monk Posted November 26, 2021 Member Share Posted November 26, 2021 If you can look beyond the wafer thin character development and the obvious propaganda, The Eight Hundred is one hell of a war movie. It takes some time to find its footing and, in the first thirty minutes, every character feels interchangeable. But once it gets to where it’s going, it’s electrifying. Not only are the action set pieces insanely well done, the director pours so much humanity into what’s happening. It doesn’t just feel like a war film. It definitely tells a story. A great story at that. With that said, action fans won’t be disappointed. The shootouts are violent, intense and beautifully shot. This is definitely more like Saving Private Ryan than any other war film. That is to say, it has the brutality and the heart.
