Stan Schmidt, considered South Africa's greatest karate instructor, celebrated his 50th anniversary in Karate in 2013. After earning a black belt in judo, Schmidt went to Japan to study karate and upon his return to South Africa, founded the JKA South Africa division as well as opened a school, becoming a surging force for the martial art there. He is a member of the governing body of the Japan Karate Association. In addition, he did get to work on two films as both actor and fight choreographer: Kill or be Killed and its sequel Kill and Kill Again, training lead actor James Ryan in karate for the films, something Ryan kept going with in his career.

Keith Geyer, a former Schmidt protege and a member of the JKA-SKC Australasia division, made this tribute for Stan Schmidt. Keith's son Dean, is also a black belt in karate and musician who appeared alongside Michael Jai White in Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown.

On October 7, 2019, one day after his 83rd birthday, Stan Schmidt passed away from Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung disorder that had bothered him for the past few years.  Schmidt moved to Melbourne, Australia at the time of his passing. The news was announced by two of Schmidt's students and Kill or be Killed co-stars, Keith Geyer and Malcolm Dorfman. Geyer runs the JKA school in Melbourne while Dorfman still operates out of South Africa.

Here's his memorial video
