After being conspicuously missing from last year’s Chinese New Year lineup, blockbuster filmmakers Jackie Chan and Stephen Chow are back to wow moviegoers with fresh material in 2019. Here are eight rib-tickling Chinese New Year comedies to catch in local cinemas this year. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (now showing)Cast: Eric Tsang, Teresa Mo, Ivana Wong, Wong Cho LamDirector: Wong Cho Lam Hong Kong comedian Wong Cho Lam makes his directorial debut with this Chinese musical comedy which is an adaptation of the 1996 off-Broadway musical of the same name. Centred around love and relationships, this song-and-dance extravaganza is touted to feature some 60 actors, many of whom will play multiple roles. Kung Hei Pat Poh (now showing)Cast: Gigi Leung, Miriam Yeung, Dada Chan, Chui Tien You, Tan Han JinDirector: Pang Ho Cheung Pat Poh is a chat group that comprises six female and two male friends. Once very close, the members grew apart when one girl had an affair with another girl’s boyfriend, and one of the girls wrote a tell-all book divulging the secrets of everyone’s romantic affairs. But, when one of the them gets into trouble, the rest cast aside their grudges and come to her rescue. The Knight Of Shadows: Between Yin And Yang (Feb 4)Cast: Jackie Chan, Elane Zhong, Ethan Juan, Lin Peng, the Luu tripletsDirector: Vash Action star Chan proves that the pen is mightier than the sword by playing Pu Song Ling, a legendary brush-wielding demon hunter who works together with a group of friendly monsters to defend humanity from an inhuman invasion. The New King Of Comedy (Feb 5)Cast: Wang Baoqiang, Yao Chen, Jelly Lin, Bruce LeungDirector: Stephen Chow Making a last-minute entry into the festive slot is Chow’s much-anticipated film which is said to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his 1999 film King Of Comedy. It is said to mirror the plot of the original movie which was about a man who is passionate about acting but struggles to even get cast as an extra in a film. Amazing Spring (Feb 5)Cast: Jack Lim, Joey Leong, Cedric Loo, Sharon Yang Pan Pan, Law Ka YingDirector: Nick Wong The tale is set in a village called Dai Dei, which is full of quirky old folks, who love to sing and dance. A city dweller stumbles upon the village and then freaks out when he finds himself stuck in the neighbourhood.
