Starting in gymnastics, Tan eventually learned Taekwondo and upon moving to the U.K. became the Men's British TKD Champion. Earning his degree in Economics from New York University, Tan started his career as actor and fight choreographer of The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu in 1980. He trained Jonathan Ke Quan in Taekwondo on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and has worked in many martial arts and action films, from Martial Law, Bloodsport II, and Lethal Weapon 4 (as the waiter Chris Rock mistakenly arrests). Phil's son Lewis Tan (born 1987) is making a name for himself in today's action entertainment. He plays the drunken fighter Zhou Chang on season 1 of Iron Fist, X-Force member Shatterstar in Deadpool 2, and Gaius on Into the Badlands. He will be seen next as Lu Xin Lee in Netflix's Wu Assassins.
