Sorry to be late to this, but Frank Djeng and I recently recorded the commentaries for this set and I was surprised how enjoyable the first one in particular is. It's extremely well made and has pretty strong productive values compared to some of the other movies of that era. Box set is definitely worth getting, they did a super job.

@FJ DeSanto

I dig your contributions to the audio commentaries and I'm glad you're doing them. But I wonder if you could either get closer to the mic or speak up a bit more. Frank's coming through loud and clear, but you've got a bit of a Clint Eastwood whisper going on sometimes. If I turn it up loud enough to hear you clearly I feel like Frank's (lovely, informative) voice will blast my eardrums, "Muad'dib" style. LOL Please know that this comment is only meant in a constructive way, not to be rudely critical. I am a fan.

I definitely want to pick up the ROYAL TRAMP set. Fun movies!

Frank usually blasts my eardrums too cause I am sitting next to him! We have tried different ways to address, this and I sent him this post so we can continue to work on it. Recently we have done the last few (including Royal Tramp movies) remotely so it may be better. This is all new to me so I don't know how it all works I just yap away ;-). Thanks for listening and let me know what you think of the future commentaries.

That's Kinnosuke Nakamura, so probably a Jidaigeki chambara film.

'Geki' eh. That name brings back memories of playing PSO on the DC. It was my characters nickname on the game.

Will skip Casino Raiders if it is boxset, there is enough asian movies coming out in next months + as haven`t seen any of them not interested of blind buy in that case.

However buy Ako Castle. Used to have it in Shogun Collection which I traded away. It is movie I watched least of 4, just one time I think. Felt later I did not give it enough attention as it`s very long movie and not much action(I remember there was however impressive battle in village). Would be great is Eureka! releases other movie from collection too(Shogun`s samurai, ninja&shadow).

Edit; well, CR is not boxset. Another to HK movie shopping list..

I understand, @FJ DeSanto. It's much more complicated (if you want to get it right) than most people probably realize. Thankfully @OldPangYau was there to guide me every step of the way with my first commentary. And even then, there was a slight vibration from our AC unit- in the basement below where I recorded- that the mic still picked up, despite having the mic's tripod on a folded towel on the desk in front of me. :worried Brandon was also responsible for stitching the pieces together- I flubbed a few things and stopped recording- as it was in several long takes, and also replacing a bit here and there. His help was the only reason I was able to do it. Basically, I can talk. That was the only "skill" that I brought to the table.. :xd: He taught me the equipment I needed, how to record it, and did everything else.

Anyway, I'm glad you don't seem offended by my comment, and yes, I'll definitely listen to more. Thanks!

Recording remotely on decent microphones and solid internet usually yields a good enough commentary from an audio point of view. Not only is Phil Gillon a great collaborator (I'm Kenneth Brorsson if you guys didn't know, ocassionally record these things, latest being Fatal Termination) but we never experience any lag or "wobbly" connection so it's smooth in that area too. It's not any less alive in our view, especially since we have structured notes. Perhaps not as off the cuff and screen specific as some listeners like but we all have a different style and I don't let it come off as a stiff reading of person's bio's and filmograhies.

I'm sure @Yihetuan would agree with me that certain other audio commentators could definitely benefit from your approach.... :tongueout

You're very kind. Well, I'm sure any commentator is divisive, including us but I always say we produce what we like to hear and I personally can't go into a track without weeks, even months of prep.

These things take time (we don't do research 8 hours a day since we have families and jobs), we watch a good amount of movies, write fresh biographies that will feel alive as they are delivered "on air" and even though we might not have any production insight or quotes from cast & crew, we always try and paint a picture of makers, performers, genre, mixed with our view. It may not be off the cuff and a party atmosphere but those tracks are usually not for me as a customer.

It's really the same approach as the Podcast On Fire show, but screen specific if that makes sense.

I'd suck at doing commentaries! I respect those that can as it sounds hard to do.

My commentary style would consist of -

'Man walks across screen wearing nice trainers.'

'Hawt Japanese lady (must google her later)'

'The sound is so AWESOME! PARTY UP IN HERE!!'

'I wonder if that is Jackie Chan's real hair............'

'What a big Cow, that reminds me I need to buy milk'

Yeah nothing informative. :P

I've heard horror stories where it sounds like persons prep to a lesser degree than you would. And it was released. You sound like an observant person. Might be fun :)

Same. Can imagine it would sound like I am talking to myself instead of audience.

I was asked to do an audio commentary back in the day, I can't remember the name of the label or the guy who was releasing them but he put out Dream Sword on DVD in the UK along with another film whose name escapes me.  I was asked to do the commentary for one of the new venoms movies I think it would have been Ninja in Ancient China?  Anyway it never happened which was probably a good thing as I know bugger all about the new venoms actors coupled with my black country accent which would have made it hilariously bad!

I have loads of respect for the guys who do the commentaries, putting in the research and presenting it in an entertaining way must be really difficult, my respect and admiration goes out to all of you

I'm pretty sure the guy you're talking about is Mike Banner who started the label Green Fan dvd. Or was it Toby Russell?

No I don't know them, I've checked my movie list and I think the label was Greenfan and they did release Ninja in Ancient China so maybe it was Dream Sword that they didn't release?

Concering the story "fall of ako castle" seems to be real fun. But the eureka trailer shows little fighting and action. I think the movie is not figthing-based?? Any aficionados of this movie here?

And how is casino raiders in terms of martial arts action?
