The Chinese theatrical release date is February 1, 2019. Shawn Dou (Wolf Totem) plays the handsome archer deity, Hou Yi, in mythological China who shot down 9 suns when 10 suns rose in the sky to scorch the fields. Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e, is played by Dilraba Dilmurat, who mostly acts in Chinese drama series. Eva Jin (Crazy New Year's Eve) is the director. Angelo Sahin (Upgrade; I, Frankenstein) is the special effects supervisor. There are variations to the story of Hou Yi and Chang'e, "but in one popular variation, as a reward for saving mankind [by shooting down the suns], our archer is given an elixir of immortality. However, he doesn't consume the pill if his wife isn't in it with him. However, Chang'e is forced to take the pill when an intruder tries to steal it. The lovers are then separated as Chang'e chooses the moon as her residence" (because she became so light-weight, she floated up to the moon and couldn't get back).
