I think the great voice dubs add at least 40% enjoyment to their films On the other hand, sometimes the later, shitty voices kind of ruin the movie, but not too much - just enough for me to wish for the voices I love. I can deal just fine with Mandarin/Cantonese and subs, but it is always a bonus if a movie has the great dub teams. If you think about it, with the dubs there are really 2 people acting for each person on screen. The voice actors can either raise the performance, or bring it down a peg or 2. The Ted Thomas crew elevates any movie for me. I'd even dub all the Hollywood classics with their voices!! I must have at least 1000 dubbed films. It takes a lot of effort and skill, but the challenge is often part of the fun. Marin Spanic who works for NEW DVD in Germany and also dubs movies as a hobby was kind enough to talk to HK Film News about NEW and the art of audio dubbing. Also to get an understanding of the effort he puts in too dubbing older films we have two clips, one of Deadly Duo with the dub simply put over the celestial video (often used with Red Sun) and one of Marin’s dubs which show what can be obtained with cleaning up the audio and better syncing. His re-dubs are often kept among a small group of collectors to prevent Red Sun from using them for their “products”, so getting a chance to see and hear this is a nice treat. Later on, as I watched more Japanese animation in Japanese, I started noticing the differences in the voice acting. For animation, Japanese voices were always the best, as the actors had proper schooling and everything sounded genuine. The Cantonese voices were ok, not too horrible. The English voices were not that great as the voices never sounded like they were taking things seriously. Over the course of the years, since spending time with English voice actors from Canada and US, the dubbing industry has changed and the bar is being set higher. I have seen girls rip out their shirts for breast autographs, so there are super voice actor fans out there…However, in the end, I still prefer the original voices the best as there are some things that can’t be translated and they maintain artistic qualities best. I highly doubt he dubbed it since he would have only been around 11 years old at the time. The process is as follows: 1) A portion of a scene containing a manageable few lines of dialogue is played on the screen (all the video is time coded - so you always see a time readout at the top of the screen), with the original Japanese dialogue soundtrack playing. While this is playing, the actor reads the English line at the same time as the Japanese dialogue, to get an idea of the way in which the line is said, and to get used to the timing of the line. If a retake is needed for all or just part of this recording, the video is rewound and it is redone. 3) The video is rewound, and certain audio tracks are played: the music / sound effects track(s), the English audio just recorded, plus the English audio for any other characters in the current scene, to hear / see how it all fits together. I heard a mention of it - as well as stuff having to do with Malaysia, apparently a market for an English dub ? - in this video about the Japanese cartoon Transformers Headmasters (Japan's alternative to season 4 of the 1980s Transformers cartoon) whose English dub they are responsible for. Lots of characters and elements got their names altered or butchered (lots of items become "powerpacks", characters have their name changed or some of their names misused), with some glorious stuff like Fortress Maximus being called "Spaceship Bruce" or Sixshot's job being "Ninja consultant" for the Decepticons...
