Member Drunken Monk Posted May 22, 2018 Member Share Posted May 22, 2018 Since we don't have a thread for this, I thought I'd start one. Yimou hit a stumbling block with "The Great Wall" (although I didn't hate it) but it looks like he's returning to his wuxia roots with "Shadow." The stills that have been released look very pretty so the film seems to have his usual visual flare. Although, there seems to be a distinct lack of colour this time around. you can view the images here. Ku Huen-Chiu is on action duties.
Member whitesnake Posted May 23, 2018 Member Share Posted May 23, 2018 (edited) All I could find out about the plot of Shadow is "the story of a great King and his people who have been displaced from their homeland and long to win it back. The King is wild and ambitious, but his motives and methods are mysterious. His great general is a visionary who fervently desires to win the ultimate battle, but needs to lay his plans in secret. The women of the palace struggle to find redemption in a world in which they have no place. And then there is a commoner, the 'everyman' around whom the inexorable forces swirl, always ready to swallow him up." From http://www.bloom-media.com/shadow/ Zhang Yimou also co-wrote the story. Cast includes Deng Chao (Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame), Sun Li (The Lost Blademan), Ryan Zheng (The Great Wall), Guan Xiaotong (Painted Skin: The Resurrection), Wang Qianyuan (Sky Hunter), Hu Jun (My Beloved Bodyguard), Wu Lei (Asura), and Wang Jingchun (Time Raiders). Shadow had its premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Edited April 18, 2019 by whitesnake

Member Drunken Monk Posted June 1, 2018 Author Member Share Posted June 1, 2018 First trailer can be viewed here... http://video.mtime.com/70753/?mid=242119 Very little action on display. Although it is interesting to see Yimou go the opposite route to his usual stuff. There's practically no colour here at all.
Member whitesnake Posted July 18, 2018 Member Share Posted July 18, 2018 (edited) Shadow - Trailer #2 - More Action. The movie is set during the Three Kingdom's period (AD 220 - 280). Looks like it opens in China on September 30, 2018. Oops, the trailer disappeared. I'll find a replacement. Member Drunken Monk Posted July 18, 2018 Author Member Share Posted July 18, 2018 This film looks absolutely beautiful. I love how Zhang Yimou has gone from the most vibrant use of color possible to no color at all.

Member whitesnake Posted November 22, 2018 Member Share Posted November 22, 2018 "Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for Zhang Yimou's action epic Shadow. The album features the film's original music composed by Lao Zai (Mountain Patrol, Police Story: Lockdown, Railroad Tigers). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples." From http://filmmusicreporter.com/2018/10/05/soundtrack-album-for-zhang-yimous-shadow-released/ Under 'Digital Music' on Amazon, search for "Shadow (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)". "The movie's soundtrack earned a nomination for best original score for composer Loudboy (it did not win). But another composer has now accused 'Shadow' producer Le Chuan Entertainment of stealing her work, alleging that it had been plagiarized in the film and used without credit in trailers. Dong Yingda, a professor of film music at China's Central Conservatory, wrote in a long statement on Weibo, China's Twitter, that Zhang had commissioned her to develop the movie's soundtrack in February of last year. She assembled a team of music history experts and top performers of classical Chinese instruments, such as the zither and pipa (a four-stringed lute), to create a score befitting the third-century Three Kingdoms period, during which the film is set. After eight months of effort, the team was told its work wouldn't be used in the final version of the movie and so would not be credited. But Dong said she and other team members were surprised to find upon its release that the final soundtrack sounded very familiar and the parts of their original score appeared in promotional videos." Member reason108 Posted April 21, 2019 Member Share Posted April 21, 2019 It`s playing locally here starting at the end of next month. I will be going. The movie looks interesting enough. Not a huge Zhang Yimou fan but I liked Hero well enough that I would give this a chance. And, I want to do my part to help my local arthouse cinema to show more martial arts movies. Plus, it looks like the kind of movie one should see on the big screen.

Member whitesnake Posted May 3, 2019 Member Share Posted May 3, 2019 As Zhang Yimou's Shadow gets its North American limited theatrical release today (but never in my city), an artsy new trailer appears on the HK Cinema Youtube Channel for Red Eye Demon, which show an obvious Shadow influence. Ironically, an actress in Red Eye Demon is named Rain Zhang. The poster is also artsy.

I just pre-ordered mine (4K UHD). I want to see how good of a job Well Go USA do on their first 4K UHD release. It got a decent theater release here in the NYC area (4 theaters in NYC & 3 more in the surrounding area - NJ & Yonkers).
