Member Shaolin Patriot Posted May 11, 2021 Member Share Posted May 11, 2021 Looks like the May 11th DVD release date got postponed. I've reached out to the film's Executive Producer for an update. In the meantime, here's a great article published in Kung Fu Magazine, featuring an interview with Lo Meng. He discusses the Venoms, his training routine and next film project. Member AlbertV Posted May 28, 2021 Member Share Posted May 28, 2021 I watched it this afternoon when I decided to rent it. It's not a total trashfest. It's clear that Samuels and Lew meant to make this a satire on Italian Mafia movies and kung fu movies. Chiu Chi Ling only makes a cameo in the opening scene of the film. Jay Kwon definitely is a face to look out for IMO. Lo Meng does the kung fu "evil laugh" a few times and it's funny as hell. He speaks both English and Cantonese in the film. The only main issue I have with the film is that James Lew's action scenes suffer from way too much "slow-motion". It takes away the impact of the fight scenes especially the big rumble at the end. Nevetheless, there were times I busted out laughing, but ultimately this is a mixed bag. I would give it a C. Oh and even though he was originally to have appeared in the film, Hwang Jung Lee did a get a "Thank You" credit.
Member Yihetuan Posted June 18, 2021 Member Share Posted June 18, 2021 I saw this over the weekend and have nothing to add as @AlbertV encapsulated it pretty well but I wasn't as impressed by it as much. Lo Meng was the real highlight for me as the rest of was pretty forgettable. Repetitive and unfunny comedic tropes playing off tired Italian and Chinese stereotypes. The lead (stuntman/actor Jay Kwon) has no on screen charisma whatsoever & his stiff delivery and wooden acting didn't help matters. I actually watched the extras before the main movie and it featured a one on one interview with Jay Kwon and I could tell right then that his performance was going to be a chore to get through. The tagline in this film was "fuhgettaboutit" and that's what I will certainly do as it's definitely not worth a re-watch.
Andrea
Vision Films Releases Mob/Kung-fu Parody "Made in Chinatown" Kung Fu. WiseGuys. You're Welcome. "A witty, warm, and winsome look into the life of a wannabe goomba, whose more wushu than wiuseguy." --Urban Action Showcase Cinema "Culturally awkward situations, funny dialogue, a love story, kick ass fight scenes, and self-realization... It's a hit!" --The Film Fan Dojo LOS ANGELES, April 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Vision Films Inc. ("Vision") announces the VOD and DVD release of the raucous genre mash-up Made in Chinatown from Executive Producer and Writer Mark V. Wiley and Directors Robert J. Samuels and James Lew. The feature-length film will be available on streaming and cable platforms and DVD on May 11. The Chinatown-meets-Little-Italy comedy sensitively handles, with more commentary than spoof, the timely Asian immigrant experience, as well as racial stereotyping and labelling. With some of the most recognizable actors known for portraying mafiosos, and the talents of veritable Hong Kong Kung-Fu masters, protagonist Vinny Chow (portrayed by Jay Kwon) finds himself unwittingly caught up in two love stories – his Chinese culture and the Italian culture he emulates based on The Godfather and Goodfellas, and his fantasy [Italian] dream date and the perfect [Chinese] girl next door. The fast-paced romp features several real Kung-Fu Masters (Lo Meng, Chiu Chi Ling, Perer Ngai, Steven Chan, Paul Sun), is choreographed by Emmy Award® winner James Lew, and a treasure trove of hidden mob movie references and quotes to delight cinephiles. Synopsis: It's Goodfellas meets Ip Man when a young Chinese nobody sets out to become a "made guy" in the Italian Mafia. Tensions are already high between the two communities as they move into each other's turf with a dirty crime commissioner playing both sides. It turns out that earning respect, finding love, and discovering his identity doesn't come so easy. He'll have to fight his way to the top. Writer-Producer Mark V. Wiley says, "On its surface, Made in Chinatown is an action-comedy poking fun at everyone's favorite Wiseguy and Kung-fu films. But at its heart, it's about the self-discovery of a second-generation Asian-American as he tries to find love, respect, and a place to fit in."
