Kino Films is working on Aircraft Carrier Ibuki, a live action movie based on the military manga, Kubo Ibuki (2014 - ongoing), by Osamu Eya and Kaiji Kawaguchi.  The director is Setsuro Wakamatsu (Snow on the Blades).  "In the manga's story, the state of world affairs is changing at a dizzying pace. This is particularly clear in the growing military strength of countries neighboring Japan, the issue of resources on the sea floor, disaster relief, underwater transport, maintaining order on the high seas, and island defense. In response to a near-skirmish with China near the disputed Senkaku Islands, Japan builds the Ibuki aircraft carrier."  (www.animenewsnetwork.com and www.crunchyroll.com)

Filming began in March, with a Japanese theatrical release in 2019.  The movie takes place over a 24-hour period.  "In the southernmost part of Japan, 20 fishing boats of an unknown nationality suddenly fire upon and occupy parts of the Hateruma archipelago. Members of the Japan Coast Guard are detained. Under the extremely tense situation, the Japanese government sends Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and an escort fleet to the area. Ryota Akitsu (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is the captain of the Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and Toshiya Niinami (Kuranosuke Sasaki) is second-in-command. It is now 6:23 am. and Japan faces one day which they never have before. (asianwiki.com)  Tourist note - Hateruma, part of the Yaeyama Islands, is the southernmost inhabited island of Japan.  The natives speak Japanese as a second language.  Hateruma, with its fine sand, is a popular Japanese tourist destination.

The real Ibuki was a heavy cruiser built by the Imperial Japanese Navy in WW II, and was scrapped in 1946.  The movie sounds like a Japanese response to recent hostile acts by North Korea and the nationalist movies coming out of China (Wolf  Warrior 2, Operation Red Sea, Operation Mekong, etc.).
