I know next to nothing about Russian cinema, but from the new movies I read/see online, they appear to love the fantasy genre over there?.

From Wikipedia - The filmmakers for Furious said "the film blends history with the present day and fantasy with realism to tell an emotional story of simple folk who become true heroes when burdened with unanticipated circumstances... The filmmakers decided to abandon the reconstruction of the thirteenth century historical events and preferred to create a fairy-tale world with good and bad characters."

Wikipedia includes the topic of Russian historical films, which includes Furious, The Horde (2012), Taras Bulba (2009), and The Scythian (2018 fantasy set in 11th century Russia).  Another topic is Russian fantasy films, including Furious and The Scythian (both again), Viy (2014) Viy2: Journey to China (2018, with Chan and Schwarzenegger, Youtube trailer), He Is A Dragon (2015 romantic fantasy adventure with a dragon, Youtube trailer), Wolfhound (2006, high fantasy Dark Ages Europe, Youtube trailer).  The Wikipedia topic, List of Russian films of 2018, includes Frontier (historical fantasy film), Beyond the Edge (action fantasy film), Empire V (fantasy film), Abigail (adventure fiction film with magic), Legends of Petersburg: Key of Time (adventure, science fiction film with magic).  The list of 2017 Russian films includes Guardians (a superhero movie with Youtube trailer), Gogol: The Beginning (adventure, horror, with mermaids and witches), The Last Warrior (comedy fantasy fairy tale with Baba Yaga and Koschei the Deathless, made by Disney for the Russian market).

The Russians seem to like their fantasy, fairy tales, supernatural, sci-fi, magical tales, and epic historical fantasy films with Russian warriors against barbarians.  Not just in recent years, but for decades.  A Russian fantasy film from 1956, Ilya Muromets, was released (re-edited) by Roger Corman in the U.S. in 1963 as The Sword and the Dragon.  The English version was narrated by Mike Wallace (the 60 Minutes Mike Wallace), and was shown on TV during the popularity of the sword & sandal epics.   Just for fun - Sword and the Dragon trailer -

2023 - Recently restored "Ilya Muromets" has been recently restored and is available on Blu-ray from Deaf Crocodile - trailer here -

Great post @whitesnake, watched the trailer but it appears to be incomplete?, the special FX were pretty good for their time, if not better than many Hollywood films of the era.

Having commented earlier on recent Russian fantasy movies, I just found out that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing The Last Warrior on Blu-ray and DVD on August 14, 2018.  This could be The Last Warrior (aka Posledniy Bogatyr aka The Last Bogatyr), the 2017 Russian fantasy film directed by Dmitriy Dyachenko and based on Russian fairy tales.  It's co-produced by Disney, so it's family friendly.  Actually the plot sounds like a Russian variant of The Forbidden Kingdom (with Jackie Chan and Jet Li), with a young man from Moscow travelling to a land of characters from Russian fairy tales, and takes part in the battle between light and dark.

However, The Last Warrior is also an alternate title for The Scythian (aka Rise of the Scythian, aka Skif), an R-rated 2018 Russian historical fantasy adventure movie, set almost a thousand years ago in Central Eurasia, in which the warriors of a proud earlier Scythian kingdom have dwindled down to a few ruthless mercenary assassins.  With the limited info I've found, it's hard to tell which of the movies is getting the Sony Pictures release.  There is quite a difference.   Update reversal - Latest Blu-ray.com News is that the release is for the bloody movie, not Disney.  Latest news is here - http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=23552

So I finally watched Furious this past week.  The alternate title is The Legend of Kolovrat - the name of the hero.  The movie includes a one-time attack on the Mongols by a giant Russophile bear.  I agree with this review - http://www.backseatmafia.com/dvd-review-furious/  "Furious is a historical action film which tells The Tale of the Destruction of Riazan [Kolovrat's city] with style and panache.  As you'd expect, there are huge battles and lots of great set-pieces.  All accompanied by a propulsive soundtrack by System of a Down's Serj Tankian.  At almost two hours long, it really zips by.  Whilst the character building and acting is fine, it's the gorgeous backdrops and beautifully choreographed fight sequences where it excels.  Furious is an epic worthy of the name."

This review isn't as positive - https://letterboxd.com/krunic/film/furious-2017/  "So what's the problem with Furious/Legend of Kolovrat?  It's boring despite the story's potential.  [Maybe he's bored, but I wasn't, so it's just a difference of opinion.] ... So is Legend of Kolovrat worth the watch?  Yes and no.  Yes, because it's nice to see what Russian filmmakers are about these days.  No because there are far better Russian movies out there.  [Maybe there are better movies, but are they available to viewers in the West?  Not so I can find them.]

Review here - https://theactionelite.com/furious-2017-review/  "Furious is a visually stunning historical fantasy epic that tells the tale of Evpaty [Kolovrat] the Furious and is essentially a Russian version of 300 meets The Lord of the Rings... The action scenes are plentiful and bloody and it never goes too long before there is some form of fight or battle.  Overall, if you can get past the rotten dubbing and unintentional humour Furious still manages to be massively entertaining and deserves to be released in the original language with subtitles so it can be appreciated better."  The Well Go USA Blu-ray/DVD gives the viewer the option of Russian or English language.

Here's a good review with some actual historical background, and a comparison of reel vs. real - http://www.unz.com/akarlin/legend-of-kolovrat/  "In my opinion, this is one of the best Russian films of the past decade."
