I know @Phantom Dreamer has already posted the sad news regarding Allen Joe's recent passing. Justt didnt want to post these video's in the other thread's, and feel Joe more tha deserves to be recognized for his own achievements too. This war veteran was the first Asian to compete in American bodybuilding shows, back in the 1940's. He also helped Bruce Lee further develope his interest in weight training.

Before the days of drugs and steroids in bodybuiding, Allen Joe built himself a great strong looking natural physique. When plastic bottles of water, mobile phones and headphones didnt pollute gym spaces. This guy wasnt a fake poser, he genuinly loved what he did, keeping himself fit right up into his 90's.

Allen Joe with Bruce Lee in a U.S shop, note the T.V Guide cover, with Lee as chaffeur Kato.

And the Winston ciggerettes, a company that would approach Lee about sponsoring Way Of The Dragon, years later.

Quote

Allen Joe is credited with giving Bruce Lee his first set of weights and inspiring Bruce to build up his body. Allen trained under Ed Yarick with such luminaries as the four Mr. America Body Building Championships: Clancy Ross, Jack Delinger, Roy Hilligenn, and Hercules-actor Steve Reeves. In fact, Allen was the first Asian to win the Mr. Northern California Bodybuilding Championship in 1946. He is also a World War II veteran, Allen currently 94 years old says, “you can never forget Bruce, once you have met him” and indeed, he still carries a picture of Bruce in his wallet.

To most people this will just be a picture of an Asian guy posing in trunks.

It was way ahead of its time, as it feature a white American woman admiring an Asian man's body. At a time when mixed race marriages were a big issue, the racial tensions/protests of the 60's had yet to arrive, when this photo was taken. I'm not sure who the young lady is?, but she must have been apart of the fitness scene at the time?.

Allen Joe knew Bruce Lee the man, and not the myth/legend. Helping the Bruce Lee during his early years, of adapting to the American ife style. Even into his later years, Joe retained a strong interest in physical culture and Martial Art's. He built and developed himself a physique, wthout the aid of drugs or fancy health products. When hard work and determination, seperated the men from the boy's.

I loved this event from San Francisco Chinese Culture Center about two documentaries of Drag Race Driver Al Young and Bruce Lee body-build trainer and friend Allen Joe.

Skip to the 20-minute mark, for the section where BL Collector Jeff Chinn, talks about BL and one of his training partners, Allen Joe.

Can anyone tell us more about the Allen Joe documentary, that was screened on this day?.

The Allen Joe Story. Allen Joe was not just a mentor and friend to martial arts legend Bruce Lee he was also the first Chinese American bodybuilding champion. Allen learned from and worked out with fitness legends like Jack LaLanne , four time Mr. Universe Tommy Kono and Steve Reeves, who played Hercules in Hollywood movies.
After being bullied at school, Allen turned his life around through diet and exercise. His impressive physique gave him confidence and help attract the love of his life, Annie, a woman he was married to for more than 72 years.
