Member whitesnake Posted March 23, 2018 Member Share Posted March 23, 2018 The Chinese fantasy film, Once Upon a Time, is based on the Chinese novel, Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms by Tangqi Gongzi. It "is a story of epic battles, deep passion, and the powerful forces that drive mortals and gods alike toward revenge, loyalty, and eternal love. Bai Qian, a goddess and monarch from the Heavenly Realms, is sent to the mortal world to undergo a trial to become a High Goddess. There, she meets Ye Hua, with whom she falls in love and marries. When an old enemy reappears in her life, everything she holds dear is threatened." The movie is directed by Anthony LaMolinara (a Hollywood special effects artist), and Xiaoding Zhao, cinematographer (The Great Wall, House of Flying Daggers) and director of photography (Little Big Soldier, True Legend). Bai Qian is played by Liu Yifei (The Four 1 - 3 films, also is Mulan in Disney's upcoming movie). Ye Hua is played by Yang Yang (The Four TV series, The Lost Tomb TV series). With "opulent palace scenes... monumental battle scenes, jaw-dropping supernatural effects like both human and godlike characters morphing into the most phantasmagorical beasts on land and sea, immense scary dragons, an underwater city, ... [and] antic animated creatures... you simply have the unquestioned eye-candy feast of 2017." Also, "the cast, which very well may be the most physically beautiful ever assembled... is another undeniable asset" and "these boys and girls can act.” (from a movie review at http://www.filmjournal.com/reviews/film-review-once-upon-time) "The story is so involved that a recent Chinese-TV adaptation of the book ran for 58 episodes. This movie's condensed telling is somewhat bewildering, although the essentials eventually become clear. But then they're really just a pretext for [the movie's] fairy-tale wonders."
