Guest kungfusamurai
Well, I have to start off that Lone Wolf & Cub and Zatoichi are the best of the best when talking about samurai films with lots of action. After those two series, the films are great but there can be long pauses as the plot is developed. Favourites of mine include: Three Outlaw Samurai (HK import) Kill! (being released by Criterion) Samurai Wolf (bootlegs) Sword of The Beast (also Criterion) Samurai Rebellion (Criterion) Sword of Doom (Criterion) For more stuff by Wakayama Tomisaburo (Ogami Itto), I'd recommend the Wicked Priest films, Killer's Mission, and the Mute Samurai series. For later period swordplay (post classic era) I'd highly recommend the Kage No Gundan TV series. You have to buy it as boots, but they are extremely well done. They center around a group of ninjas led by Sonny Chiba, so lots of backflips and stuff. Watch Shogun's Ninja and you'll see the type of swordplay - more like HK than traditional chambara.
