Image Comics' upcoming graphic novel Son of Shaolin, a modern-day martial arts adventure, is getting a live action film courtesy of Dwayne Johnson, who is producing the film. Rick Famuyiwa has signed on to direct the film adaptation. Here's the description from Image Comics, who will release the graphic novel on September 20

A kung-fu epic set in the back alleys and subway tunnels of Harlem, New York. Kyrie, an aspiring street artist who is struggling to make ends meet, learns that he is the last living descendant of a secret sect of ancient Shaolin elders. Confused and unsure of where to turn, he finds a father figure in the mysterious Master Fong. Fong trains Kyrie in martial arts in anticipation of an attack from Red Fist, a relentless killer who has already murdered the rest of Kyrie’s bloodline.

Sony Pictures will be releasing the film version.

With Dwayne Johnson producing and a director with the caliber of Rick Famuyiwa, chances of a theatrical release is pretty high on this one. I did read that they want to bring the essence of classic martial arts films to the modern day setting. Jay Longino already has the first draft of the script done. According to Deadline:

"The logline is under wraps, but what we do know is that the film will not be a remake of the Shaw Brothers film. It will be inspired by that tone and is a modern day martial arts movie influenced by classic Hong Kong cinema."

It would be great if they could get Tim Man & Sammo Hung to collaborate on the fight choreogrpahy. Highly unlikely its ever going to happen, but it be great to see them pair up on a project such as this.
