Shorinji Kempo in Martial Arts movies

Hello, I thought this could be a worthwhile thread. Basically, I believe that Shorinji Kempo is hugely underrepresented in popular culture as a whole, particularly in movies. For a quick rundown, it's a fairly new martial art whose official foundation as a shcool back to 1947, although it's founder Doshin So (Real name: Nakano Michiomi) was already practicing with his own unique hybrid art of Chinese and Japanese fighting styles as far back as the 30's.

For all intents and purposes, it's a modernized and more cohesive rendition of Shaolin Kung-Fu that blends together the techniques of Chinese boxing, the system and structure of Karate and most especially, Zen teachings. Indeed, the SK organization views itself as more of a religious organization than a fighting school, so much that it considers SK as being strictly for self-defense rather than offence; it's for this top very reason that it's top practitioners (who more often than not are ordained as monks if their rank is high enough) are usually forbidden from taking part in contact competitions expect for official demonstrations. Shorinji Kempo is also arguably the first 'Mixed Martial Art' long before such a term even existed as a concept, and also predated Bruce Lee's own Jeet Kune Do by at least two decades.

In terms of movies we have obviously have Sonny Chiba's The Killing Machine (Which is a kinda-but-not-really bio of Doshin So that paints him as a righteous, albeit politically incorrect hero) and Etsuko Shihomi's Sister Street Fighter, both of whom serve as competent gateways to Shorinji Kempo. Several other actors such as Shin Koyamada and Hiroyuki Sanada have training background in Shorinji Kempo, although specific demonstrations of the martial art in itself seem to be quite rare, at least outside of Japan.

There is a brief scene showing Shorinji Kempo in Zatoichi Meets the One Armed Swordsman.

Could you describe the scene in question?

Why not watch the movie mate?  I'd have to- to describe it.

Nope, too late for that! Youre gonna have to take the ultimate test to prove yourself as a true Forum Warrior.
