Japanese movies more intelligent than Chinese ?

While I favor Chinese (HK) cinema over Japanese, it is often like comparing French film to Bollywood. Of course not across all genres and such. But as a general sweeping statement, one is very in your face, big and broad, and sometimes almost exhaustive in its pursuit of entertainment value, while the other is more reserved, contemplative and minimalistic in its expression. Again, not a rule without exceptions on both sides, but if you had to be blunt about it.
