In the 1970's, as martial arts films were rising in America, Charles Bonet was one actor who had the distinction of starring in a film entitled Death Promise, in which he played a karate expert seeking revenge on the slumlords who killed his father. As a result of seeing this film, I decided to begin researching this little-known actor and martial artist.

Reading an interview on MartialForce.com, Charles Bonet was born in Comerio, Puerto Rico. His family moved to New York City's Lower East Side and later, Washington Heights. At the of fourteen, Bonet began training in Tae Kwon Do under Master S. Henry Cho before eventually finding his true calling when he began taking up Goju-Ryu Karate under Sensei Eddie Reyes and then while serving in the Marines, trained in Shorin-Ryu Karate while stationed in Okinawa under Grand Master Eizo Shimabukuro. In 1972, returning home to New York, Bonet opened his first martial arts school, "The Bronx Budo-Kai" school. He would open an alternate school in Miami, "The Miami Budo-Kai".

In 1975, Serafim Karalexis, the president of Madison Films who was responsible for helping jump-start the film career of Ron Van Clief, "The Black Dragon", discovered Bonet and cast him in The Black Dragon's Last Revenge, opposite Van Clief. In 1977, Bonet not only starred in Death Promise, but was also one of the film's three action directors alongside the late Thompson Kao Kang and Bill Louie. In 1978, Bonet appeared in Way of the Black Dragon and performed stunts for the horror film Don't Go in the House. His last film would be the 1986 film Joey, when Bonet decided to solely focus on teaching martial arts.

In 1999, Hanshi Charles Bonet moved to Phoenix, Arizona where to this day, he teaches Shorin-Ryu Karate. He holds a 6th-dan in Shorin-Ryu Karate and an 8th-dan in Nisei Goju Karate.

Here is an interview from 2013 he conducted on the Hanshi's World Channel on Youtube.

Yes. He had the classic death scene in Black Dragon's Revenge. Everyone in the grindhouse was waiting for Ron Van Clief to make things right. Great B movie!

Quote

Although he is recognized by many as, “La Pantera (The Panther)” a characteristic image created from his roles in martial arts films back in the 1970s, there are those who acknowledge quite differently. Not that his notoriety from acting should be lessened in any manner; a little known fact: he is perhaps one of the earliest, Hispanic martial artist, to star during the explosion of martial arts films in the 1970s. There are far more who know and remember Charles Bonet as an extremely talented yet ‘deadly’ karateka, a force to be reckoned with a known reputation.
