Member masterofoneinchpunch Posted December 30, 2015 Member Share Posted December 30, 2015 I had this posted at heroesoftheeast forum which no one actually visits and then posted at bulletsnbabes which more people should visit. Maybe someone here might get a kick out of it. Not sure how valuable it is (other than for my own benefit), but it will make it easier for me to look up some reviews and data. As you notice below he had not reviewed that many Hong Kong films. I also think he did not understand many of the aesthetics of HK film as well. He used a four-star system.I might add some other critics as well. Feel free to tell me if I miss anything. Debating on putting in the Cannonball Run films which he reviewed, though he really hated them. If anyone is interested I was thinking of posting all the ratings of Asian films from the Leonard Maltin guide.Roger Ebert's Reviews of Hong Kong Including Co-production Movies2046 **½Ashes of Time Redux **A Simple Life ****Chungking Express ***Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (US/Hong Kong) **Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Taiwan/Hong Kong/China) ****Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (Hong Kong/China) ***½Eros (segment The Hand) ****Exiled **½The Eye (Hong Kong/Thailand) **½Fallen Angels ***Farewell my Concubine (China/Hong Kong) ****Hero ***½House of Flying Daggers (China/Hong Kong) ****Infernal Affairs ***Infra-Man ***In The Mood For Love ***Ip Man 2 ***Iron Monkey ***Jackie Chan's First Strike ***Kung Fu Hustle ***The Legend of the Drunken Master (aka Drunken Master II) ***½Lust, Caution (Taiwan/Hong Kong/US) ***Mighty Peking Man ***Mr. Nice Guy ***Operation Condor (aka Armour of God II) ***Red Trousers: The Life of the Hong Kong Stuntmen **Return of the Dragon **Rumble in the Bronx ***Sex and Zen ***Shaolin Soccer ***Temptress Moon **Three... Member massa_yoda Posted December 30, 2015 Member Share Posted December 30, 2015 Thanks for sharing this. I remember back in the 90s enjoying watching Siskel & Ebert covering the North American releases of Jackie's films. Some of these I haven't read yet, but they should be a fun read. I'm also surprised there isn't more.
Member masterofoneinchpunch Posted December 30, 2015 Author Member Share Posted December 30, 2015 Thanks for sharing this. I remember back in the 90s enjoying watching Siskel & Ebert covering the North American releases of Jackie's films. Some of these I haven't read yet, but they should be a fun read. I'm also surprised there isn't more.Thanks. One of the reasons I compiled this was because I was wondering how many reviews he actually did of Hong Kong films which as we see is not that many. Plus I am always interested in critical views of Hong Kong films from those who are not experts in the cinema, but are considered good-to-great reviewers/critics. I was also interested in what he considered the best from Hong Kong. Plus it is also convenient for me to check up on some films I need to watch and having a review handy.I'll probably compile the Leonard Maltin ones because it is something that I'm curious on now. I was also thinking of a future assignments: putting down all his Mainland, Taiwan and South Korean links to reviews. And updating the Hong Kong/Mainland reviews with the new reviewers (though these are really a spotty lot and they never responded to my comments about them :).) If anyone is interested please let me know.
Member Yakuza954 Posted December 31, 2015 Member Share Posted December 31, 2015 My favorite Ebert review of a Hong Kong film- http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/infra-man-1976 "When they stop making movies like Infra-Man, a little light will go out of the world." Truer words were never spoken...

Or before that when Dragon The Bruce Lee came out in theaters and they never reviewed that I think?
