Member Iron_Leopard Posted December 19, 2015 Member Share Posted December 19, 2015 I haven't seen "Snake in the Eagles's Shadow" and with "Dragon Lord" being slightly average I feel these two films are the best of old school Jackie Chan. Another VS matchup that would make a great double feature. But which do you prefer?
Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted December 19, 2015 Member Share Posted December 19, 2015 I prefer SITES slightly over DM. SITES has better story and characters while DM has better fights. DM vs Young Master- the 90 minute English dub of Young Master is my favorite Jackie movie. Maybe if I saw DM with the original English dub I would change my mind, but for now Young Master is my pick. It's just too damn funny.
Member DragonClaws Posted December 20, 2015 Member Share Posted December 20, 2015 I'm not sure I could pick between these two films because I rate both very highly. Drunken Master might have Hwang Jang Lee but The Young Master has Whang In Sik. The scene where Whan In Sik gets freed from the police escort is one of the finest examples of Hong Kong movie action. One hell of an introduction for a Martial Arts movie character too. Then Drunken Master has Yuen Woo Ping handling the fights scenes and there some corkers in that film too. The more I think about the two films the more I cant decide which I favor the most.
Member masterofoneinchpunch Posted December 21, 2015 Member Share Posted December 21, 2015 Both are easily worth watching, though I rank Drunken Master over the two (and over SITES as well). Not too many Jackie Chan films I've seen more than Drunken Master (only Police Story.) Drunken Master is the second most lent Jackie Chan film of mine. But it is pretty close and both are quite fun and every kung fu film should see. Drunken Master review vs. Young Master review. The Drunken Master review got put on moviefanfare.com. Both are ten years old, The Young Master review is a little crusty (using Pauly Shore voice) and read it at your own expense.
Member Drunken Monk Posted December 22, 2015 Member Share Posted December 22, 2015 "Young Master", in my opinion, is the greatest kung fu film of all time. It's perfect. The original dub of "Drunken Master" is fantastic, but "Young Master" has more going for it.Fight fans might prefer "Drunken Master" but when it comes to a comedy/fight combo, "Young Master" is head and shoulders above the rest.
Member paimeifist Posted December 22, 2015 Member Share Posted December 22, 2015 The Young Master is my favorite "classic Jackie film", so I'll have to take it here. Honestly, I think I like SITES more than Drunken Master as well. I acknowledge that the fights are generally better in DM, but the soundtrack and Jackies underdog character gives SITES a slight edge for me.
Member ToryK Posted December 22, 2015 Member Share Posted December 22, 2015 I haven't seen Drunken Master in a while, but I think I'm okay with going with Young Master here. It's fucking fantastic. And I can't tell you how hard I laughed at Jackie scaring the goldfish out of its bowl! I think I was laughing at myself for thinking it was so funny as much as I was the actual scene.
Member AlbertV Posted December 22, 2015 Member Share Posted December 22, 2015 (edited) As much as I like Drunken Master, Young Master just had more of a comic feel to the film, especially Chan's scenes with Yuen Biao and Shek Kin, then of course the painful 15-minute fight against Grandmaster Hwang In-Shik. My 9-year old daughter can imitate Chan after the first hit to Hwang in that fight because she found that reaction from Chan genuinely priceless and I do mean the English dubbed version. Plus, I can't forget that theme song, "Kung Fu Fighting Man". Edited December 22, 2015 by AlbertV
Member sym8 Posted December 24, 2015 Member Share Posted December 24, 2015 I think the action in young master is far superior than what's on show in drunken master but my favourite movie is drunken master because for me it's more entertaining(and you have Hwang jang Lee the Lord of the leg doing his thing)
Member ShaOW!linDude Posted December 25, 2015 Member Share Posted December 25, 2015 (edited) I'm a Drunken Master man. I think Young Master has better production and story, and I like Chan's comedic abilities, but this one seems to have a greater emphasis on that than the fight choreography, which is indeed superb, though I admit I find the end fight a bit wanting. (I always think Whang In Sik's escape in YM is Hwang Jang Lee in DM or SITES, and then when I watch those, I'm like, "Hey! What the...! Where's the awesome breakout fight?") Drunken Master just has some of the best training sequences captured on film, and the physicality of the choreography is mind-blowing at times. Member 66 Mantis Posted December 31, 2015 Member Share Posted December 31, 2015 I preferred The Fearless Hyenna over either of them, personally.
Member Mr Sawuchi Posted January 1, 2016 Member Share Posted January 1, 2016 I'd rank Drunken Master ahead of Young Master, but both are great movies. I feel like Drunken Master has the best elements of all the early Jackie Chan movies between choreography, humor, cast and cinematography. I noticed a few mention that they haven't heard the original dub track. I found it on the Beverly Wilshire DVD (see link) in a bargain bin a few years back. The picture sucks but it's worth the money just for the voices alone. http://www.hpbmarketplace.com/moviesearch.detail?invid=12979462302&qcond=6&browse=1&qwork=100014878&mtype=V&qsort=p&page=1
Member DragonClaws Posted December 2, 2019 Member Share Posted December 2, 2019 (edited) I might appear to be randomly bumping this old thread, but I couldnt find another suitable thread for it. I searched fourteen pages into the Classic Martial Art's Cinema and couldn't find a thread dedicated just the film, rather than a particular release of it. I even came up emtpy when using this sites search engine. Edited December 2, 2019 by DragonClaws

I'd have to go with Drunken Master overall but I think the end fight in Young Master is better and the best Hwang In Shik has ever looked. HJL is the better kicker but In Sik is more versatile with kicks, hands and joint locks/grappling Edited December 14, 2019 by CT KID
Member Killer Meteor Posted December 14, 2019 Member Share Posted December 14, 2019 DM for me, but I had to give it some serious thought. I just love the nostalgic feel of it, and it's the perfect kung fu comedy. YM is more polished but from a kung fu perspective, it's a bit wanting in some elements. Yuen Biao is held back as much as Hwang In-Sik was in Way of the Dragon.

Was so disappointed when i watched the HKL release. Having said that it gave me a chance to see the longer fight sequences. Dragon Lord i can't remember watching. Kinda hoping 88 or Eureka Films will work their magic

Member Tex Killer Posted May 29, 2020 Member Share Posted May 29, 2020 Young master easily. Action in DM is great but don`t enjoy watching movie when fights are not going on. Some annoying characters there, including and mainly Jackies. YM is terrific movie, one of Jackies best. Superb action scenes, entertaining humour and solid cast.
