A "Point Break" remake? Who the hell asked for that? Big Trouble in Little China starring The "Crock" Rocky Johnson? Get the F outta here with that garbage. Who asked for any of these remakes?

You've got reboots of remakes now. This, comic book films, and sequels. The well has run dry. When's the "Welcome Back Kotter" movie coming out?

You're just now noticing ? Been well over 5 years since it seemed Hollywood ran out of ideas and through the motions.

In less than 5 years we got two recent franchises rebooted (Spiderman and Fantastic Four), a shit ton of superhero films (a couple of Marvel movies every year) and young adult book series turned into movie series (with at least one book made into TWO movies)... Nothing's changed since 2010.

I don't think it's that bad. Although I agree that Point Break remake is garbage, there has been a lot of indie stuff in 2015. OP have you seen Ex Machina yet? Or SPL 2?

I hear their planning on doing another Charlies Angels film too. Then there's the new Ghostbusters and Roadhouse films. Re-makes have been around for a long time now but there's been a huge increase in the amount of them getting made. If Hollywood fails to re-make it for the big screen they re-boot it for the small screen.

Ex Machina looked like soft core cyborg porn. Maybe I'll give it a chance at the redbox one of these days.

SPL2 is out on dvd? Definitely going to grab that when I see it. Didn't realize that was a Hollywood production, I don't remember seeing it in theaters.

I agree there's some great indie stuff, but I guess the OP meant stuff from the major studios like Fox, Disney or Universal.

Indeed. 2009 was the last time I saw more than 1 or 2 new films.  I vote with my dollar, that's all Hollywood hears now.  For the most part, I rent new and buy old these days.

SPL2 is not. I forgot about that sorry. But yeah man, are you into horror? There are some good smaller films that is worth a watch. Hollywood does suck though so I agree with that.

In terms of Hollywood big blockbuster action movies, yes they tend to suck. But outside of that like comic book movies and shit, I think the blockbusters are way better than the last decade in my opinion.

When I saw the Point Break trailer in the theater I uttered "you got to be kidding me."

But I have heard this argument that Hollywood is out of ideas for decades.  I imagine I could find it from the early days of literature on cinema.  Hollywood is big enough and large enough that even when they overdo remakes, sequels, current trends like comic book movies and YA adaptations (some of them I do like), there is always films that go under the radar (or even popular films that are actually good).  For fun on another site I made a top 10 Hollywood list from 1930 to 2013 (technically it was Hollywood and some films from England; now I'm curious if I did not do a 2014 list).

Recycling ideas is happening in any big film market around the globe, not just in Hollywood. China, Japan, Korea, France, UK etc. When certain movies break new ground and create trends, other filmmakers will join the bandwagon and cash in on the hype for as long as they can until each next trend. Unfortunately these days, filmmakers have come to a point where monopolizing movies is the mere issue more than artistic imagination hence for why we keep seeing reboots/remakes of classics. Creating was more relevant in the older days up to the 90s. From a mainstream perspective, it all transitioned from creativity to being more about making as much money as possible by any means necessary: Targeting average mass audiences. There are creators out there but not ones made for these audiences.

I can see the non-creative suits sitting around the table talking about the Point Break remake - lets just stuff it with every extreme sport we can fit in! Plot-characters? who gives a shit, people want to see the extreme stuff! The original is far from a masterpiece but it was still grounded.

After watching the remake of Clash of the Titans I'll not be giving hollywad any of my hard earned cash, I do not remember one single thing from that movie, it was just a cgi whirlwind that went to setpiece to setpiece.

After Star Wars, I'll be even more selective.

Sure, every culture recycles and remakes films that's a given. I suppose I am still bummed the Disney animation executive was right: people want spectacle now. Less characters and story.
