Kung Fu Killers - By Brian Trenchard-Smith

Quote

My one hour documentary World Of Kung Fu (1973) was a ratings success for the Seven Network, so I quickly sold a sequel concept to Channel Nine, this time 75 minutes for a 90 minute slot. The film would follow Australian stuntman Grant Page going to Hong Kong to learn more about kung fu, and to find who would succeed the late great Bruce Lee as Asia's top martial arts star.

The Man from Hong Kong (1975) shares a certain generic experience with Michael Powell’s They’re a Weird Mob (1966), both films having been restored by ScreenSound Australia: National Screen and Sound Archive and recently unwound in film festivals

I wonder if he’s really correct about the saw-in-the-head scene really being in TBB? He might know where a theatrical print might reside.

He's clearly seen it, but wether or not he owns/knows someone who owns a copy, is another question?. Brian Trenchard-Smith, is much more open about seeing it, than some people are. When the rare madnerin version comes up, its either a fabricated VHS related story. Where some fan meets a friend, who had a cousin, who's oler brothers owned a copy. Or its long term fans, talking about their experiences back in the 70's. Quite posible, the prints sent to Australia in the 70's, varied from other international versions?. It wouldnt surpise me if prints circulated round, in higher up collectors circles. Where people have a bigger budget to spend on a 35mm version of a rare film print.

Oddly, this edition of Brian Trenchard Smiths Traier From Hell, about WOTD. Has now been removed from YouTube?. Unlike the other videos he created for this series, including the one for ETD.

Lee only signed one film as director but he is as much auteur of his films as a great comedy team is of theirs. You can see his mark in the staging of action, the casting and even in aesthetic decisions made for non-action scenes. It is easy to pick out which scenes in his early films were not directed by Lee because of their lack of dynamism and reliance on cheap corner-cutting techniques. As he grew older he would probably have become primarily a director, and we are all the worse for not having decades of Bruce Lee films to enjoy. - Brian Trenchard-Smith

Does anyone know if director Brian Trenchard Smith interviewed anyone on the subject of Bruce Lee?, while he was filming his Kung Fu Killer's documentary?.

I seem to recall Brian interviewing Andre Morgan.

Brian once had a magazine called The World of Kung Fu.

Thanks @Cognoscente, do you know how many issues the magazine ran for?.

About the below magazine, Brian's visit to the Shaw studio had to have been before October '73 because that month marked the publication of a Hong Kong Movie News issue featuring photos of Supermen Against the Orient. As for the reference to the pre-production of The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires, that was filmed between October and December (according to Chris Fellner's The Encyclopedia of Hammer Films).
