I liked the anime quite a bit; this looks about as faithful an adaption of the source material as possible with a two hour plus running time.  I think that's the key to the possibly excessive running time; they were trying to be faithful to the material.

I liked it for what it was and I had no prior knowledge to the source material. It really is like:

 

(Amelie + The Castle) x Japan = Princess Jellyfish
