Member Secret Executioner Posted July 27, 2015 Member Share Posted July 27, 2015 Since we're talking VCDs, I remember asking about them on kungfucinema and they don't seem like a great media with limited space (implying you may have to change discs half-way through a film), audio issues (two different tracks playing together, one in each of your ear if you're using headphones) and a subpar quality compared to DVDs or even VHS (!). What's amazing is that the media is still popular in Asia (while the rest of the world has forgotten them 15+ years ago) and that new movies get VCD releases (along with DVD and BD). Like KenHashibe suggests, better not pay too much for them, and they are indeed much cheaper than DVDs and BDs on yesasia.

Member teako170 Posted August 2, 2015 Member Share Posted August 2, 2015 I saw SHAOLIN VS. WU TANG (1983, HK, aka. Shaolin and Wu Tang) above, and wanted to point out that it's not actually a Shaw Brothers production. It's one that I used to have on my SB shelf though, along with a few other titles that feel like they should be SB films... like ONE-ARMED BOXER (1971, HK, aka. The Chinese Professionals). Here's the list of the Shaw Brothers films I have... and YES, I know I have a problem! But still... it's better than smoking crack, right?! LOL They are all physical DVDS, Blu-rays, a few VCDs, and DVD-Rs of the titles released on the Ziieagle Box. Dang. That's 347 Bob. (No, I didn't count them. Put 'em in an Excel sheet). That's about 50 more than me. I never made a list of the SB I have. Just one large list. Something to do on a rainy day or in 20 years when the the girls are not bugging me. Is it films you have on their own and in boxsets, movies you have on their own in different releases ? Or do you have these movies on various medias (DVD, VHS, BD, VCD...) ? I don't know about Reason108's multiples, but i have multiples because of reason's like The Grandmanster with Tony Leung - there were three different cuts; Theatrical, US release, and international. I wanted them all. Shaolin vs Wu tang - it's a hot mess and the versions were copied from what looks like the VHS and one of them had all the scenes where it wasn't cut off but was Dubbed, and the other was cut off but subbed! Crippled Avengers/The Return of The Five Venoms - I didn't know they were the same movie because of the name change!! I'm happy one is digital and another DVD. I may buy DVD's of the Digital iTunes ones because I can't copy them to disk

The alternate titles are indeed confusing too, I do have a few movies several times under differents titles (nothing Shaw Bros though).

But, overall, I would say that most Shaws that I own (Chang Cheh and Lau Kar Leung films) are at least double/triple-dips. I see. I do that too, though I may get rid of "lesser" releases depending on what I gain from the new ones. I recently found a One Swordsman trilogy pack while I already had Return and New. I sold ROAS (only had the French dub), but kept NOAS cause it's the 2-DVD release (bought as an upgrade over a single disc release that I also sold). Member Secret Executioner Posted August 14, 2015 Member Share Posted August 14, 2015 Nice collection, Ken.
