Member MarsHarmony Posted January 8, 2012 Member Share Posted January 8, 2012 I thought it would be fun to track some of the stories and characters that Shaw Brothers carried on or retold. Three Outlaw Samurai was released May 13, 1964 distributed through Shochiku Studios. Starring, left to right, Mikijiro Hira, Tetsuro Tanba and Isamu Nagato. Written and directed by Hideo Gosha with cinematography by Tadashi Sakai, Three Outlaw Samurai is a beautifully told tale of farmers who seek justice with the aid of some rogue samurai. It's also about to be released on blu ray by The Criterion Collection. The Magnificent Trio was released November 8, 1966 distributed by Shaw Brothers. Starring left to right, Lo Lieh, Wang Yu and Cheng Lei (Cheng Lui). Written and directed by Chang Cheh, with cinematography by Wong Wing Lung. Chang Cheh retells the story with very few changes from the original film, but adds his own very distinctive touch to it. Two great movies from one great story. http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/zz317/marlamst3k/Shaw%20sequels/comedrink00001-1.jpg

Member MarsHarmony Posted February 10, 2012 Author Member Share Posted February 10, 2012 Boxer From Shantung, released February 11, 1972. Although not his premier appearance, it is an outstanding debut showcase for Chen Kuan Tai, the martial arts All-Asian Champion of 1968. Chang Cheh set the tone for his story telling for the next several years with this film, featuring brilliantly choreographed action by Masters Liu Chia Liang and Liu Chia Yung. Ku Feng and Fung Ngai portray the villains, this film also stars Ching Li and David Chiang Da Wei. A much lauded and analyzed top ten hit, it made superstars of its lead and director. They packed blood-soaked symbolism and dramatic power into the tragic tale of "Ma Yung Cheng" (also the film's Chinese title), who becomes the first Chinese to defeat a professional Russian wrestler, only to find fame more dangerous than he ever imagined. Internationally famous director John Woo served as assistant director on the production and now openly acknowledges its influence. Quote from unidentified source at "FiveStarLaser.com". Chen Kuan Tai in Boxer From Shantung. David Chiang Da Wei in Boxer From Shantung. Ku Feng in Boxer From Shantung. Fung Ngai in Boxer From Shantung. Man of Iron, was the follow up to Boxer From Shantung's great success. Released October 12, 1972, Chen Kuan Tai and Ching Li return as a new characters, twenty years later, about to experience a similar fate. Also starring Wang Chung, Yeung Chi Hing, Chu Mu, Tin Ching and a couple of brief appearances by Fu Sheng. "This is the Foochow Road in Shanghai. In 1922 Na Yung Chen was ambushed at Qing Lin tower and was mortally injured. He was surrounded by many people who axed him to death. It's been more than 20 years and the Foochow Road has changed but only on the outside; inside it is filled with low-lives. Ma Yung Chen of Shangtung has become a legend. A similar tragedy is about to re-enact in this place. The hero's name has changed naturally. Our protagonist is a famous person in this vicinity - Qiu Lian Huan."Part of the titles sequence from Man of Iron. From the IVL edition of Man of Iron. Chen Kuan Tai in Man of Iron. Ching Li in Man of Iron. Wang Chung in Man of Iron. Yeung Chi Hing in Man of Iron. Chu Mu in Man of Iron. Tin Ching in Man of Iron. Fu Sheng in one of his several brief appearances in Man of Iron. Member RyanWheeler Posted May 24, 2012 Member Share Posted May 24, 2012 Does anyone happen to know if The Water Margin is part of a series? If I recall correctly Tiger killer was also a part of a series. If I'm mistaken, please correct me! Edit: I think "The Delightful Forest", "All Men are Brothers", and "Amorous Lotus Pan" fit in there somewhere as well. Some might just be side stories. Member RyanWheeler Posted May 24, 2012 Member Share Posted May 24, 2012 Thank you! I believe that's another name for "All Men are Brothers", so the order so far would be: The Water Margin All men are brothers (7 Soldiers of Kung Fu) Delightful Forest I also just realized that "Five Shaolin Masters" is a sequel to "Shaolin Temple". I'm sure there are many others that follow the same Shaolin story, but these are two that I've watched recently. There are so many Shaw films with similar Shaolin stories that, for me, it is hard to keep up with them all.
