Member D1 Ma Posted October 18, 2015 Member Share Posted October 18, 2015 It's an OK movie. I thought it was somewhat similar to Stephen Chow's Journey to the West, while the Journey being much, much better. Better actors, better FX, better pacing and a better story. tooI was a bit confused about MH's target audience. I thought the whole genre with cute monsters was too childish to entertain the adults and too risque at some parts for the little kids. Maybe, for somebody around 13-15 yrs old it would be fine. I know, I'm wrong as the movie made a fortune in China, but that's just my thoughtsTo me it was a rather interesting curiosity, a chance to take a look at another example of Chinese culture. Seeing Eric Tsang and Sandra Ng was a nice bonusWhy it became such a monster hit is beyond me
Member whitesnake Posted June 17, 2017 Member Share Posted June 17, 2017 This news recently appeared on dreadcentral.com http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/233271/mvd-goes-chinese-monster-hunt/ Monster Hunt gets a U.S. DVD release, dubbed in English, on June 13th, 2017, from FilmRise and MVD Entertainment. The sequel, Monster Hunt 2, will get a February 2018 Chinese theatrical release. Tony Leung Chiu-wai has been added to the cast. Lionsgate picked up Monster Hunt 2 at Cannes for U.S. and U.K. release, sounds like a simultaneous release date with the Chinese release. http://variety.com/2017/film/asia/cannes-lionsgate-monster-hunt-2-1202430036/ Oct 25, '17 - Asian Film Strike posted a beautiful character poster and a few pictures for Monster Hunt 2 at - https://twitter.com/AsianFilmStrike/status/923178915912232970 Blooper reels and fun-on-the set of Monster Hunt 2 (thanks to https://twitter.com/AsianFilmStrike) at - http://video.mtime.com/68769/?mid=237182 Official trailer for 2 - International trailer for Monster Hunt 2 -

On the other hand, Rotten Tomatoes gave it 62% and the audience score was 47%. I enjoyed it very much in the same vein as Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back and League of Gods, fantasies with action, humor and annoying critters. A warning from an Amazon reviewer said not to get the English dub on Blu-ray or DVD, since that had been edited. FilmRise released an all-region DVD, uncut, in Mandarin with English subs that's available on Amazon. I hope FilmRise will release Monster Hunt 2 similarly. Monster Hunt 2 gets a limited theatrical release in North America on February 18, 2018, and in the UK and Ireland on February 23, 2018. Monster Hunt synopsis, trailer, monster character posters (so cute), human character posters, behind the scene photos, and list of limited release theaters in North America, UK and Ireland (even including a local theater, which is rare) here - Oops, forgot to include - http://monsterhunt2movie.com/
