Member AlbertV Posted March 31, 2015 Member Share Posted March 31, 2015 (edited) Disney announced yesterday that their version of Mulan, a hit animated film in 1998, will be after Beauty and the Beast to get the live-action treatment. Per Dark Horizons: The studio has bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek which follows the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in said film. That movie saw the young woman disguise herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink ("We're the Millers") are producing the new movie which will follow in the wake of the huge successes from the company in recent years including "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent" and the currently in cinemas "Cinderella" along with upcoming live-action takes on "Beauty and the Beast," "The Jungle Book" and "Dumbo". Member Secret Executioner Posted March 31, 2015 Member Share Posted March 31, 2015 Disney sure has shown a lot of imagination lately... The DTV sequel craze of the 1990s/2000s is now replaced by plain remakes...

Member AlbertV Posted February 15, 2017 Author Member Share Posted February 15, 2017 Whale Rider director Niki Caro has signed up to direct the movie. They are currently looking for an Asian or Asian-American actress, preferably one skilled in martial arts to take on the titular role. Here's one idea I would love to see...Sarah Chang If she can master English, I would even suggest Zhang Lanxin

Member whitesnake Posted December 24, 2017 Member Share Posted December 24, 2017 The preview looked too good. So I still don't know if there will be a wise-cracking little dragon in the live action Mulan. There was Michelle Yeoh in one preview scene, and she's not even listed in the cast! China was so bugged at the way Disney portrayed Mulan and Chinese culture in the animated Mulan, would China even let Disney film any scenes in China (like the Great Wall) for the live action version?

Member DiP Posted April 12, 2018 Member Share Posted April 12, 2018 I don't think filming will start this year as they are still in the casting stage. So far, it's only Crystal and Donnie onboard.

Member AlbertV Posted April 12, 2018 Author Member Share Posted April 12, 2018 (edited) http://www.darkhorizons.com/jet-li-gong-li-join-disneys-mulan/ Gong Li is going to play the villain and Jet Li is in final talks to play the Emperor of China! It has been mentioned that the live action version will not be completely faithful to the 1998 animated film. So maybe there won't be an annoying little cgi Mushu dragon after all? With Gong Li as the villain, will she play the leader of the Huns? She's not noted for martial arts skills, so she wouldn't be playing an enemy general. Maybe a schemer on the Chinese side? Just don't make Shang an undercover prince (as in Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, 2009).
