Disney announced yesterday that their version of Mulan, a hit animated film in 1998, will be after Beauty and the Beast to get the live-action treatment. Per Dark Horizons:

The studio has bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek which follows the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in said film. That movie saw the young woman disguise herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war.

Chris Bender and J.C. Spink ("We're the Millers") are producing the new movie which will follow in the wake of the huge successes from the company in recent years including "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent" and the currently in cinemas "Cinderella" along with upcoming live-action takes on "Beauty and the Beast," "The Jungle Book" and "Dumbo".

Secret Executioner

Disney sure has shown a lot of imagination lately... The DTV sequel craze of the 1990s/2000s is now replaced by plain remakes...

Whale Rider director Niki Caro has signed up to direct the movie. They are currently looking for an Asian or Asian-American actress, preferably one skilled in martial arts to take on the titular role.

Here's one idea I would love to see...Sarah Chang

If she can master English, I would even suggest Zhang Lanxin

The preview looked too good.  So I still don't know if there will be a wise-cracking little dragon in the live action Mulan.  There was Michelle Yeoh in one preview scene, and she's not even listed in the cast!  China was so bugged at the way Disney portrayed Mulan and  Chinese culture in the animated Mulan, would China even let Disney film any scenes in China (like the Great Wall) for the live action version?

Dark Horizons reports that Disney has moved back Mulan to March 27, 2020. It was originally scheduled to be released this November, but shooting hasn't begun yet.

It has been mentioned that the live action version will not be completely faithful to the 1998 animated film.

So maybe there won't be an annoying little cgi Mushu dragon after all?  With Gong Li as the villain, will she play the leader of the Huns?  She's not noted for martial arts skills, so she wouldn't be playing an enemy general.  Maybe a schemer on the Chinese side?  Just don't make Shang an undercover prince (as in Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, 2009).

New Zealander Yoson An (who is a karate black belt and freestyle wrestler) will play Chen Honghui, who will be Mulan's love interest in the new film. Chen is a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung (Donnie Yen)’s unit.

Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story;  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) has been added to the cast of the Disney Mulan.  He will play "Bori Khan, a warrior leader who is intent on avenging his father's death."  He and Gong Li are the bad guys.  News from  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/disneys-mulan-adds-jason-scott-lee-1129918

The 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' alum will play a villainous warrior leader in the live-action remake.

First look at Liu Yi-Fei in costume, for her role in the live action Mulan, from Disney.
