Member OpiumKungFuCracker Posted March 7, 2015 Member Share Posted March 7, 2015 In Ip Man 2, he was smoking a cigarette before the big fish market fight. Was he a smoker in real life? How old was he when he died?
Administrator KUNG FU BOB Posted March 7, 2015 Administrator Share Posted March 7, 2015 Yes he was. A lot of people from that time period smoked like fiends, and he was one of them. He was 79 when he died (throat cancer ). Did you know that after he got very sick he realized that he should allow his kung fu to be filmed before he died? His son filmed it, and it's said that in between the demos he was so weak he could barely stand. But he still performed all the movements perfectly while the camera was recording him. Amazing will power, skill, and heart. A true master!
Moderator Asmo Posted March 8, 2015 Moderator Share Posted March 8, 2015 Can't remember where I heard it, but a fair amount of kung fu masters from that period (and possibly a little later on) started smoking cigarettes as they were told of supposed health benefits tobacco had. This contributed to a lot of people becoming addicted. I wonder if Yip Man was told the same thing?
