Member Secret Executioner Posted February 13, 2015 Member Share Posted February 13, 2015 Somebody on here (MarsHarmony) has a bunch of screenshots from this movie in a photo album, and they made me curious. Alexander Fu Sheng seems to be the main star here and more than his colorful outfit (which looks nice though kinda odd), I'm really bugged by the settings - it looks as though some of these fights are set on clouds in the sky. That certainly doesn't look bad and the movie could be interesting (from what I read, it's based on an old myth), it just kinda bugs me. Opinions from our Fu Sheng specialists and/or Shaw Bros enthusiasts ?
Member teako170 Posted February 14, 2015 Member Share Posted February 14, 2015 Like you mentioned, the character is based on a legend which involves some fantastical settings and situations. Its far from great but I've seen worse. I wouldn't say its a must-see. More for the Fu Sheng (or Chang Cheh) completist. Pollard did a decent review a while back.... http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/na-cha-the-great-1974

Member kaleyboy Posted February 14, 2015 Member Share Posted February 14, 2015 It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I remember that I enjoyed it quite a lot when I watched it a few years back. Certainly not an all out classic, but if you're in the market for some slightly goofy fun, then you could do a lot worse.
Member Alexandra Posted February 20, 2015 Member Share Posted February 20, 2015 Na Cha is a wonderful chinese legend. If you love Fu Sheng, you must see the movie. You can find info in Alexander Fu Sheng's thread, with info, pictures and some research about the original legend of Nezha, The Marshal in the Central Altar, a interesting chinese deity, in which the movie script was inspired. The sacrifice scene, IMO, is one of the most beautiful Fu Sheng shots.

Member whitesnake Posted February 26, 2015 Member Share Posted February 26, 2015 I second Alexandra's opinion on Na Cha the Great. I loved Fu Sheng. I loved this movie, since seeing it 40 years ago at the Great Star Theater in San Francisco. It was most impressive on the big screen. All the kids in the audience were laughing at the different colors of blood spurting from the undersea warriors, after Na Cha stabbed them. The music was appropriately epic. Before the IVL release, the only way I could find Na Cha the Great was on bootleg VHS from a Chicago theater manager who ran Chinese movies, and the Red Sun bootleg dvd, which was dubbed. I even read the 2-volume Creation of the Gods published by New World Press, just to get the background story in English, the whole legendary downfall of the Shang dynasty. (The Bruce Lee cartoon, Chinese Gods, is another part of the story.) So I'm a Na Cha nut, picking up in Chinatown an English language kiddy book about him, as well as a little statue of him praying, and trading for a VHS copy of a Chinese animation, Na Cha Stirs Up the Sea. Member Drunken Arts Posted March 26, 2015 Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 I watched this last night, i went it to it thinking i will not like it and it wasn't meant to be any good. And add to that Im not the biggest fan of Fu Sheng anyways.. BUT i really enjoyed this film, not a classic imo, but far better than i expected or lead to believe. For example i think the guy who sold it to me said it was a 4/10 for him... The dated effects didnt bother me either, i really liked alot of them actually. Looked like a lot of fun to have been involved in this film at time of making. I really enjoyed Fu Shengs portrayal of Na Cha too, especially when he realised what was really going on with the oppressed "common people" and what he did in turn to help them. One of the fights near the end when Fu Sheng fights a group with his golden ring was excellent. I still have a couple of questions about the film that either i missed when watching or maybe i should of known about before going into the film, yet i got the whole jist to it. Good Fun.
