The news was made official yesterday: Spider-Man is not only getting a stand-alone movie in 2017, but he will officially be a part of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. In other words, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are joining forces and it now looks highly likely that Spidey is joining the Infinity War in 2018.

However, it looks likely that Spider-Man will appear in Captain America: Civil War. It would make sense as Peter Parker was one of the first to uncover his identity under the Superhero Registration Act.

Because of the addition, Thor: Ragnarok will now be released in November 2017, Black Panther will be released July 2018, Captain Marvel in November 2018, and The Inhumans in July 2019.

I'd read of the Civil War movie project, but Black Panther ? Captain Marvel ? Inhumans ? Didn't know those were planned...

This MCU is becoming a giant headache with all these movies and characters, and I'd go as far as to say that it will soon be bigger than Star Trek (not sure how many there are here) or James Bond (25 counting the upcoming one) as far as the amount of films go.

BTW, does this cancel the Amazing Spiderman universe altogether, is it an alternative Spidey (like the MCU has alternative versions of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) or is it building up on the Amazing Spiderman continuity with the Secret Six and Venom projects being scrapped ? It sounds very early for this Spidey to reveal his secret identity - though Iron Man's identity was revealed in the very first movie of the continuity...

I believe the plan is that Sony is planning to keep their VENOM and SINISTER SIX films but will co-produce the new Spider-Man movie with Marvel, which is looking to be another reboot. The questions that now arise are a) are they going to keep Peter Parker or will they have one of the alternate Spideys, like Miles Morales; and B) who will play Spidey?

Or the clone (Ben Reilly) ?

On a sidenote, and it may sound far-fetched, isn't the idea of Iron Man revealing his secret identity very early on a nod to his position on the Superhero Registration Act (as he's ultimately the head of the supporters of this act) ?

I'm not sure how it will flow for Captain America though - I mean, his powers come from an experiment conducted with the US Army (papers, records ?) and the Avengers are kinda working for the SHIELD already in the MCU...

Nevermind my remark on the secret identity, I realized this stuff did not exist in the MCU. Captain America 3 sounds damn promising though.

And it has been confirmed that there will be a new actor playing Spider-Man. If they go with Parker, the top name everyone has been mentioning is Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf, The Maze Runner); but at this time Sony is still undecided on which Spidey they plan to include.

It is now starting to look like Spider-Man will in fact be Peter Parker, and we're talking an actual teenage Peter Parker. Apparently, the first Spidey candidate has been revealed:

I never heard of this kid, 16-year old Mateus Ward ("Murder in the First").

The Wrap has learned Marvel and Sony has a short list of who they want to audition for the role of the new Spider-Man. The list is down to five.

  • Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender's Game)
  • Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars, Naked Brothers Band)
  • Tom Holland (Wolf Hall, The Impossible)
  • Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar, Homeland)
  • Liam James (2012, The Way Way Back)

They will audition over the next two to three weeks with the possibility of first appearing in Captain America: Civil War, which begins shooting next week; and then get his own film in 2017, which has been confirmed will NOT be an origin story. Then the strong possibility of an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.

This is only a rumor, but the title of the new Spider-Man movie may actually be...

Spider-Man: The New Avenger, but as of now it's not confirmed.

Dark Horizons and Latino Review:

"Ender's Game" and "Hugo" star Asa Butterfield has reportedly emerged as the favorite to play the new version of Peter Parker in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films starting with a small appearance in "Captain America: Civil War".

Butterfield was one of five names mentioned the other day, a list that also included Nat Wolff, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet and Liam James with each said to be up for the highly coveted role.

Today, Latino Review posted the report of Butterfield moving into the prime position, with their source saying: "Marvel had liked him since day one" and that he may have already bagged the role.

Butterfield's reps replied with only "no comment" in regard to the report.

For the record, Latino Review has been nearly spot on when it comes to certain casting

Looked him up, and I must say there's something about his appareance that makes me want him to be the pick cause I think he'd make a great Peter Parker.

Tom Holland has been officially cast as Peter Parker and Jon Watts (director of the upcoming thriller Cop Car) will be helming the Spider-Man film of 2017.

The official word just came from Marvel

To prepare for his role as the new Spider-Man, Tom Holland has been taking gymnastics and parkour classes. Here he is in one of his gymnastic classes

Caught this Friday evening, with my other half. It's another entertaining Marvel adventure, I'm far from a Spider-Man expert so cant judge this from a fans perspective. Not sure what Disney where thinking by putting an online porn related joke in a movie thats mostly aimed at pre-teens?. The Star Wars Lego product placement was amusing to see. Not to mention that all the characters use Del laptops, Del also just happened to have a Spider-Man themed advert pre to the film.

Saw this yesterday.

Was expecting little but I was surprised at just how flat, safe and, frankly, dull this one was.

Almost every joke fell flat, and referencing John Hughes films only served to show how much better he did teen comedies 30 years ago than the bland pap this one served up.

Utterly bereft of anything interesting apart from the great Michael Keaton.

Would you say its better than the last big screen version of Spider-Man, or worse @Karlos?.

@DragonClawsHonestly, I'd take this new version over the Maguire/Raimi ones, which I detested.

At least the cast were reasonable in this new one and Holland is better than Tobey Maguire, I think.

Never saw the Garfield films - are they worth a look?

(Man, I sound like a real misery guts! :laugh)
