Member Takuma Posted February 3, 2015 Author Member Share Posted February 3, 2015 Sono really is working hard right now. Two films coming in the summer, and it seems he is filming a new one at the moment if I understood correctly. Maki Mizui posted this photo today: - https://twitter.com/mmizui/status/562479065756495872 That's Sono on the left and Yoshihiro Nishimura on the right. Member Takuma Posted February 5, 2015 Author Member Share Posted February 5, 2015 "Sony will release the picture [shinjuku Swan] on 300 or more screens on May 30. That is double the scale of his last movie “Tokyo Tribe,” which had a 150 screen outing last year." "The prolific Sono plans to release a total of six films in Japan in 2015. One is the monster movie parody “Love & Peace,” which is set for an early summer bow; another is “Hisohiso Boshi,” a Fukushima-nuclear-disaster-themed film without a firm opening date. Other titles have yet to be announced." - http://variety.com/2015/film/news/sony-picks-up-cult-indie-director-sono-sions-shinjuku-swan-1201419367/
Member Takuma Posted February 9, 2015 Author Member Share Posted February 9, 2015 Real Onigokko (The Chasing Game) movie by Sono. Opens July 11. - http://realonigokko.com/ No trailer or even pics available yet. I've seen the first two films in the series. Both are quite alright, especially the second one (see ) (I have a soft spot for chase/running movies). The premise is kind fun: Sato wakes up in a parallel universe where everyone names Sato has been ordered to be captured an executed. And then he runs. A lot. Parts 3-5 were essentially direct-to-dvd stuff although they did have very brief theatrical run. They were all released back to back within a month or two. Member Takuma Posted February 17, 2015 Author Member Share Posted February 17, 2015 Minna! Esper da yo! in September. Sono directed (6 out of the 12 episodes for) a TV show of the same title a few years ago, but I haven't seen it. Website (pretty empty so far): http://esper-movie.gaga.ne.jp/ Here's an ad for the TV show: caWboJs5Nzg Wow, that's rather Love Exposure esque. Both the movie and the TV show star Shota Sometani. Member Takuma Posted September 27, 2015 Author Member Share Posted September 27, 2015 So, I finally saw Shinjuku Swan!It sucked. You'd think a film about a Shinjuku scout would be interesting. But no. This isn't really about sex industry and it's certainlu not about the girls working in Shinjuku. It's mostly about young guys yelling at each other and fighting ala Crows Zero but less gay and less stylish. I don't think there was a single interesting scene in the film. No boobs either. And it runs almost 2.5 hours. I was bored out of my head. You'd never know this was directed by Sono if his name wasn't on it. It doesn't look or feel like a Sono film at all.I think it was just a paycheck project for Sono. I doubt he did it for any other reason than money. I could imagine the film was pretty much planned out ready by the time he entered and they just needed someone to direct it for the screen. It's based on manga and the screenplay is by two guys who have never worked with Sono before, one of them being the film's producer (Mataichirô Yamamoto, who was also producer/writer on films like Azumi 2, Lupin III, and the Crows Zero films). The irony is that this is Sono's most financially successful film. It actually opened no.1 at the box office. Normally you don't see Sono films on the list (because the distribution is too limited. This one, however, was a major release). Moderator One Armed Boxer Posted November 6, 2015 Moderator Share Posted November 6, 2015 The Japanese release hit the shelves on the 3rd, as usual with no English subs - http://www.yesasia.com/global/shinjuku-swan-2015-blu-ray-premium-edition-japan-version/1044799092-0-0-0-en/info.html http://www.yesasia.com/global/shinjuku-swan-2015-dvd-premium-edition-japan-version/1044798731-0-0-0-en/info.html
Member Takuma Posted January 28, 2017 Author Member Share Posted January 28, 2017 The sequel opened a week ago and ranked 2nd (or 3rd) at the box office. That will probably make it Sono's second most popular film ever. I have zero intentions of seeing it considering how hard the first one sucked (and how Sono himself said the sequel was gonna suck ). Instead I'll go see Antiporno in a few weeks.
