Member DrNgor Posted January 19, 2015 Member Share Posted January 19, 2015 I'm not familiar with the man's old school work, so I can't comment on that. From 1986 on, I can say that when it comes to gun-fu/bullet ballet, the man almost has no equals. When it comes to his non-gunplay stuff, however, with few exceptions, I find most of his work in the past 20 years to be overrated, especially by the Hong Kong Film Association.
Member DiP Posted January 19, 2015 Member Share Posted January 19, 2015 I know him mainly for his wide variety of action choreography for many different types of Hong Kong films. He's one of the best working in Hong Kong today. But he's known for few acting roles, such as Bruce Lee's student in Enter the Dragon and Chow Yun-Fat's troubled undercover cop friend in Hard Boiled.
Member ukrevrend Posted January 20, 2015 Member Share Posted January 20, 2015 You left one of his best & classic movies off the list: The Incredible Kung Fu Master (1979) with Samo Hung, Lee Hoi-Sang & many more top notch old school fighters, with 'action director's': Samo, Leung Kar-Yan, Yuen Biao & Lam Ching Ying, a must have!!! I'm more into 'Old Schhol', so his early movies stand out for me, especially these: 18 Fatal Strikes, The Killer Wears White & Incredible Kung Fu Master, I think a lot of 'old schoolers' would have these 3 in a favorite pile! I always felt he was under used in the 80's era of kung fu movies, his later stuff I haven't really seen, but I have seen his name as 'action director' on a couple from your list, I think Samo taught him well! Bless:cool:
Member Morgoth Bauglir Posted January 20, 2015 Member Share Posted January 20, 2015 There's a lot of movies where I wish he had more to do, like 10 Brothers of Shaolin, Shaolin Devil Shaolin Angel, 2 Assassins and Mar's Villa. He does give one of the best ever fighting performances in Killer in White.

Haven't seen TKWW and IKFM, but I certainly love 18 Fatal Strikes. Though more for the batshit crazy bad guy. Back on topic, I realized I had a lot of this guy's films (whether as an actor or as an action director, some I have seen (Hero, 18 Fatal Strikes, ETD) and some I still have to watch (Mar's Villa, Twin Dragons, The Accidental Spy). Gotta say he has some nice resume.

He does give one of the best ever fighting performances in Killer in White. He was the eternally grinning, super-cocky 'killer in white' in MAR'S VILLA, one of the 'bigger' roles he snagged in his earlier days. Opera-trained and a stunningly nimble-footed, rubber-limbed KF actor, I also remember him as the second lead (behind Sammo) in INCREDIBLE KUNG FU MASTER. As an actor he usually got (and still occasionally takes) smaller parts, and thanks to his coiffure I always seem to spot him and generally welcome his appearances. He's still very athletic and good looking for his age. And of course, as an action director Tung Wai is certainly one of the most consistent and, inside the HK film fraternity, most definitely also one of the most respected. Funny that he doesn't get repped all that often in discussions amongst HK cinema followers in the West.

You actually get to see Tung Wei vs John Liu. I was let down but I've seen some people say it's a great fight.
Member Secret Executioner Posted January 22, 2015 Member Share Posted January 22, 2015 Alright, now I REALLY gotta see this one. Stephen Tung Wai was pretty good in 18 Fatal Strikes and John Liu kicks major ass in Incredible Kung Fu Mission... Can't wait to see the "crossover". Member paimeifist Posted January 22, 2015 Member Share Posted January 22, 2015 GHW, I could have sworn we talked about Mars Villa a little on the "last classic you've seen" thread. It's aka is "Wu Tang Magic Kick." I could be mistaking you for someone else though. With that said, it sounds like I need to see 18 Fatal Strikes. Alright, now I REALLY gotta see this one. No, it wasn't with me sadly, as I haven't seen it yet. I know of the AKA cause that's the title I have it under. re 18 Fatal Strikes: yes, you do.

Member DragonClaws Posted January 27, 2015 Member Share Posted January 27, 2015 Wu Tang Magic Kick is a classic old school film well worth watching, and not just for the presence of Stephen Tung Wei. The old Eastern Heroes dubbed VHS release has some really bad audio. I'm not sure if their DVD release had the same sound problems?. Despite that I still found the film really enjoyable. Picked up the film again via the Mill Creek box set but cant comment on the sound or picture as Ive yet to re-watch it. 18 Fatal Strikes is now high up on my to watch list after reading peoples comments. Member DrNgor Posted February 3, 2015 Member Share Posted February 3, 2015 Stephen Tung Wae turned 61 today. Wow. I didn't realize he was about Jackie Chan's age. I Always thought he was a little younger. Happy Birthday, Stephen Tung Wai!
Member DragonClaws Posted February 3, 2015 Member Share Posted February 3, 2015 He was around 20 when he appeared in Enter The Dragon. I always thought he looked a lot younger in that film more mid teens. A lot of Asian actors of this era aged quite well.

Member andy338 Posted February 4, 2015 Member Share Posted February 4, 2015 Does anybody know of a link to the live demo footage that was used as an extra on the UK Wu Tang Clan dvd release of the Incredible Kung Fu Master? I've no longer got the dvd but I remember the acrobatic performance on the demo was awesome and i'd love to see it again.
