Jimmy Heung, legendary movie mogul with alleged triad links, dies in Beijing

Movie mogul Jimmy Heung Wah-sing died in Beijing on Thursday night. He was 64 and had been receiving treatment for oesophageal cancer in the capital.

Heung co-founded Win’s Entertainment with his elder brother Charles in the 1980s, which went on to become one of the most successful film studios in Hong Kong in the 1990s.

The brothers have been alleged to have family links to triads.

The company scored a number of box-office hits including God of Gamblers, starring Chow Yun-fat, and the comedy series Fight Back to School about an undercover cop starring Stephen Chow Sing-chi.

Jimmy Heung was one of the few local filmmakers who ventured into the mainland market in the 1990s. Most were discouraged by rampant piracy problems across the border at that time.

The Heung brothers went their separate ways later that decade. With Jimmy Heung focusing on the mainland, Charles Heung formed China Star Entertainment Group to continue making films in Hong Kong.

In 2001, Jimmy Heung and his then girlfriend, actress Shirley Cheung Yuk-shan, were arrested by anti-triad officers in connection with a criminal damage case said to involve breast enlargement pills.

It was reported that he had complained of a sore throat earlier this year and a subsequent medical examination confirmed he had oesophageal cancer. He declined chemotherapy and flew to Beijing to seek treatment.

Jimmy Heung married his present wife Duanmu Yingzi – a mainland-born businesswoman – in 2009.

Charles Heung’s wife Tiffany Chen, vice-chairman of China Star Entertainment Group, expressed her condolences today.

”He was the 13th child, my youngest brother-in-law whom I loved the most. [Jimmy Heung], his brother Charles Heung and myself battled for eight years in the movie industry from 1986 to 1993, which was our golden era,” she wrote online.

“Although we went separate ways in 1993, will always remember his thoughtfulness and uniqueness. Rest in peace.”

For those who do not know, Jimmy along with his brother Charles created Win's entertainment which produced hits like The God of Gamblers series, Fight back to School series, King of Beggars, Kung Fu Cult Master, Casino Raiders, Handsome Siblings, Royal Tramp, The Last Hero in China, Lee Rock, just to name a few.

It is said that just about every actor/actress back then made a movie for the Heungs. Jackie Chan is one of the few exceptions.

They at one time did own Ocean Shores Video.

I think the brothers got into a feud with each other in the early 90s, and that's what caused them to be separated from each other. Charles wanted to go completely legit with his business whereas Jimmy continued his dirty ventures in the HK film circuit using his family's triad connections.

Maybe after Charles played all those good guys fighting gangsters it must have dawned on him that he was a thug himself. Jimmy probably fit right in with the current PRC.

"The brothers have been alleged to have family links to triads." There's nothing alleged about the family links. Charles & Jimmy's father was the founder of the Sun Yee On!
