Another Shaw one is Holy Flame of the Martial World. A couple other Pearl Cheung ones are Wolf Devil Woman and Matching Escort.

Also check out The Dragon Lives Again and The Amazing Super Chan.

I loved Buddha's Palm, I really got a kick out of Lo Lieh's character!

I also recommend Drunken Dragon since I am a big fan of the Yuen movies, and Beardy!

Matching Escort is also commonly known as Fury of the Silver Fox.

I would also recommend hopping vampire type flicks such as Mr. Vampire, or Spooky Encounters. There's a lot of films that fit this style.

I wonder if they will release both parts? Me thinks it's one pt one that they're putting out.

Edit - Nope they're doing both! Cool!

I'm sure that some of you try to watch only the classic kung fu movies like Drunken Master and Fist of Fury, but I know that a lot of you try to watch as many kung fu movies as you can, even if they aren't well known. This has led to the rediscovery of some really bizarre movies.

For me, I think the weirdest kung fu movie is Taoism Drunkard (1985). You can't say that a movie is completely sane when it has a red-haired villain, a woman who uses rolls of cloth as weapons, an old exorcising woman played by a man, a rat man who drives around in a rat shaped car, a breaking dancing couple, and a house of insane traps including a trail of fire...and the banana monster. Yup. If you've seen or heard of this movie, you should know exactly what I'm talking about.

A lot of people say that Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (1983) is the weirdest HK movie they'd seen, but I had built it up as being so incredibly insipid that I found it to be not as weird as I thought it would be. I was actually kind of disappointed. It's certainly a strange movie, but it's nothing compared to Taoism Drunkard (I wouldn't watch Taoism Drunkard more than once).

Which are your favorite weird kung fu movies? Which are your least favorites? And which are the weirdest in your opinion? How about for weird HK movies in general? I'm interested in seeing what kinds of weird crap you guys have come across. :yociexp57:

Check out this thread: Crazy flicks like Battle Wizard? which has some nice suggestions including of course Taoism Drunkard. I chimed in with:

Drunken Dragon (1985: HK: Chiu Chung-Hing) Where else do you get a candle-headed villain, a strip teasing grandmother played by a man, an eccentric uncle who talks to paintings and has a house a bit like Fearless Hyena 2 (and a gun with a Mercedes Benz symbol on it), legs being cut off, peeing jokes (ok there are lots of films with this) and a large kick-ass wife who makes cannibal like dishes.

But I have also seen since then Shaolin Drunkard which you can read about in the below thread (all of the Miracle Fighter movies are mentioned, just not in depth.) But if you have not seen the one I mentioned it is pretty cool. Not as much MA action as I would have liked, but so crazy and quite fun.

Movies like Shaolin Drunkard?

I've actually heard of Drunken Dragon. Man, it seems like Drunken Dragon one-ups everything weird about Taoism Drunkard. I haven't gotten around to watching Shaolin Drunkard, but I will soon. I've seen the other movies in the trilogy, Taoism Drunkard and Drunken Tai Chi (which actually wasn't that strange). I'm not necessarily looking for recommendations, but this thread is more like a "learning experience," to learn about the different movies that I might've not heard of. This is also for those who want to express their opinions about movies like Funny Family (1986). Any movie with kung fu bowling in it is probably worth noting. Actually that movie's Taiwanese. Taiwan has its fair share of absurd movies.

Shaolin Drunkard is just plain fun. I started off just watching to see how the quality was and I got pulled in by this bizarre story of an inebriated drunk who is a master of kung fu who "accidently" loses a vampiric kung fu master he was keeping watch of. There is also a man dressed up as a grandmother, the drunk who can walk up walls poke holes into paintings and cause alcohol to come out, shrink himself, bizarre vehicles and countless other things I should not mention until you see the film.

Drunken Dragon (aka Exciting Dragon) has a decent R1 Rarescope release and I was pretty thrilled to see it/watch it when it came out. Prepare to enter Bat Country.

I have to catch up on some of the "weird" ones like Taoism Drunkard.

There is definitely some inventiveness in Shaw films like Battle Wizard and Holy Flame of the Martial World.

I just remembered Tsui Hark's We're Going to Eat You. A nice little combination of pretty much everything. Also involves a man dressed as a female who you are supposed to take as a female (seems to be a reoccurring pattern.) This delves more into horror, but weirdness is throughout.

The drunkard movies are weird for sure, but so well made I love them. Like the other thread mentions it's in Taiwan where these movies get really weird, like the Peach Boy series. Beyond weird. I think they are children's movies but I would have have been really freaked out if I was a youngster.

I'd say a few other pretty weird films are...

Ninja - The Final Duel

Last Hero in China

Bastard Swordsman 1 & 2

Come to think of it, the two "Heroic Trio" films are pretty bonkers.

I remember you once said that Drunken Dragon has a stripping grandmother played by a man. On hkmdb, it says Chiang Sheng plays a character named Granny. Is Granny the stripping grandmother? I don't like the thought that classic Shaw Bros actor and former venom, Chiang Sheng, would later play a stripping grandmother. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend Taoism Drunkard. I thought it would be strange yet entertaining, but in my opinion, it was just strange. It was a hard movie to get through. A lot of people thought it was hilarious though so maybe you will too.

The Shaw Bros fantasy movies are considered classics though. I haven't gotten around to watching them, but I want to. Tsui Hark has come a long way though. I haven't watched We're Going to Eat You, but I might. The trailer looks absolutely disgusting and disturbing, but it somehow also looks kind of funny. A few Taiwanese/Chu Yen Ping-directed movies are really strange, but the action in them is fantastic and they're pretty entertaining. I liked A Book of Heroes (1986). It's a very fun movie!

Give these Lin Hsiao Lan movies a watch.

Child Of Peach

Kung Fu Wonderchild

Magic Of Spell

Magic Warriors

Heroic Fight

Twelve Animals

There are all right there in the weirdness category plus good action.

The Peach Boy series? I haven't heard of it. It sounds interesting.

Ninja - The Final Duel

Last Hero in China

Bastard Swordsman 1 & 2

Come to think of it, the two "Heroic Trio" films are pretty bonkers.

It seems like Alexander Lou has made a lot of crappy looking ninja movies. I haven't seen any Alexander Lou movies, but I've seen a few ninja movies and to be fair, I haven't seen one that wasn't insane. I'm starting to watch more Jet Li movies, so Last Hero in China is on the list. Still have to watch more Shaw Bros movies and the Heroic Trio films.

Child Of Peach

Kung Fu Wonderchild

Magic Of Spell

Magic Warriors

Heroic Fight

Twelve Animals

The only movie from this list that I saw was A Heroic Fight and I "loved" it. I didn't love it like I love The Prodigal Son, but it's an extremely entertaining movie. I'm bound to watch it many more times. Lam Siu-Lau (aka Lin Hsiao Lan) was only 19 in A Heroic Fight and she was fantastic. I'll definitely check out some of her other work. Are Child of the Peach 1 & 2 the Peach Boy series? I'll give them a watch.

Taoism Drunkard (1985) is also the weirdest kung fu movie for me.

Raw Force (1982)

Crippled Masters (1979)

Deadful Melody (1994)

Filthy Guy 1(978)

Kung Fu Cannibals (aka Raw Force)? I think I'll skip that one along with We're Going to Eat You. Cannibal movies aren't really my thing. I saw a trailer for Crippled Masters. It certainly looks weird, but the actors are able to do some pretty cool things without the use of their limbs. I've heard good things about Deadly Melody. It's going on my list. I'll watch anything Sammo makes, but I haven't heard of Filthy Guy. I'll probably get around to watching it too. There have been so many movies mentioned, maybe Taoism Drunkard isn't the weirdest. We'll find out after I watch the Child of Peach movies. I'll watch anything with Lam Siu-Lau in it.

I'm having a bit of trouble remembering this but this is what I can think of. The Child of Peach movies go in this order.

Child of Peach

Magic of Spell aka COP 2

Magic Warriors aka COP 3

I think COP 3 is a sequel in name only. I can't remember parts 1 and 3 very well.

Part 2 is the most memorable for me. Creativity is one of the main things I look for in a movie, but Magic of Spell goes too far. It's the weirdest movie I've ever seen. I doubt you will ever watch it Ken since the crazy movies don't seem to be your thing, so here's another reason not to see it (although I do recommend the movie!). During a series of fights at the end, a few of the kids accidentally fall into the Devil King's jacuzzi of blood. They appear to drown and the Devil King absorbs their power. At this point the Devil King is strong enough to transform into Chang Shan, my favorite movie fighter! White haired Chang Shan then gives Lam Siu Lau a brutal beat down. It's a good thing she's not really a little kid because Chang Shan lets her have it. Luckily Chang Shan gets distracted when one of the characters thinks that Chang Shan is his dad. This gives Lam Siu Lau the opportunity to eat her friend, the ginseng Buddha, and it makes her much stronger.

Then at the end of the movie there's a weird song that plays. It sounds like a Chinese version of puff the magic dragon.

While looking up this movie, I found the clip from the end including the theme song on YouTube. Looks...interesting. I don't know, I think the theme song sounds more like a Chinese version of the Never Ending Story theme song. I do actually like weird movies, it just depends on how much they entertain me. I don't know why, but I didn't find Taoism Drunkard entertaining, but I really liked Drunken Tai Chi. As far as HK movies go, I liked Fantasia, Flying Dagger, Mismatched Couples, and almost all of Stephen Chow movies. I've seen quite a few Taiwanese action movies that most would consider strange like Book of Heroes, Fantasy Mission Force, Funny Family, A Heroic Fight, and many others. For Japan, I watched House and it's the only movie that I loved that I wish I hadn't seen. I seriously want to find the COP movies. I'll find them somewhere, but it's extremely hard for me to find. I've stumbled across some crazy stuff at Chinatown. I'm hoping I can find it over there for $2.

The problem with weird movies is that I love a lot of them, but I don't know how to rank them. As far as entertainment value goes, some movies would get a 5 out of 5, but as far as being an actually good movie, it'd get maybe a 2 out of 5. How do you rank a weird movie?

I personally love weird movies, the weirder the better. The Child of Peach movies are great Here's a few more you might like:

Riki Oh the story of Ricky (based on a Japanese manga, very bloody, but really weird and entertaining).

Nine Demons (lots of people here talk about how much they hate this one, but I like it)

Fury of the Silver Fox with Pearl Cheung. Actually all her movies are pretty weird especially Wolf Devil woman.

Secret Executioner

KenHashibe: I get your point. Some weird movies are pieces of shit as films, but the WTF stuff is really enjoyable.

A good example of what you're discussing is the 1980s production Ninja Masters Of Death. Crappy cut-and-splice flick that mercylessly butchers what looked like a very nice Korean war flick. Yet the ending is so OTT that it's great.

E-pmpnyiuKA

Movies that are both weird and good are fairly rare. As far as weird movies go, I could recommend 18 Bronzegirls AKA The 18 Bronzegirls Of Shaolin. But that film is so confused and weird that it's one of the worst MA movies I've ever seen.

Funny no one's mentioned Miracle Fighters (1982), since both Taoism Drunkard (1984) and Shaolin Drunkard (1983) have both been mentioned.

Oh, also for your consideration: Operation Pink Squad 2 aka Thunder Cops (1989).
