Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted August 11, 2014 Member Share Posted August 11, 2014 I'm wondering how good they are? Are they worth going to some trouble to get translated? Is the action good, i.e., same standard as Shaw Brothers from the time. I've only seen from the Highway (great movie, terrible kung fu) and Mad Mad Sword (same, funny, but lackluster action). I am curious about The Living Sword and Escorts Over Tiger Hill, etc.
Member ShawAngela Posted August 11, 2014 Member Share Posted August 11, 2014 The living sword has good action. Escorts over Tiger Hills reminded me of King Hu's movies... The fisrt sword, Jade dragon, The violet mansion, A pearl in command, Lotus camp, Iron bones, Mallow forest are all with good action, as well as Forbidden killing, Black panther 1969, Travels with a sword, The great highwayman and The royal seal (but I have this one incomplete...). Smiling swordsman doesn't have too many action, if I remember well, unless I'm mistaken ( I watched it a while ago, now...). Though it's not wuxia, Gunfight at Lo Ma Lake has good action too, and there's a few good fights in Lady in the moon. Let me know if there are other titles around that I might forget to mention. Member panku Posted August 17, 2014 Member Share Posted August 17, 2014 I didn't know there were so many other Cathay wuxia / action films available.
Member NoKUNGFUforYU Posted July 3, 2015 Author Member Share Posted July 3, 2015 So, I got a hold of a few- Mallow Forest has some good fights, whereas Escorts over Tiger Hill is sort of artsy and cuts away at times. It seems like an attempt at Kurosawa. A pearl in Command has some ok fights. I think the best I have seen are Eagle's Claw on Viki.com (about 49% subbed) and Forbidden Killing (No Subs). The Great Highwaymen is decent, though the guy flying around like superman put me off! Anyway, most of the stuff is choreographed by Han Ying Chieh, so it is good, but not great, like Lau Kar Leung or some of the other Shaw guys. Sammo pops up in Eagles Claw with the 3 section for several fights, so, check it out!
