Member DiP Posted April 17, 2014 Member Share Posted April 17, 2014 With the emergence of 3D in Chinese/HK cinema, I've been thinking of the employment of CGI in the Golden Era of Hong Kong Cinema in comparison to today. Which films would y'all consider has the best-looking CGI/visuals? I'd go with: Zu: The Warriors from the Magic Mountain The Storm Riders (CGI looks much better than I remembered it being) Dragon Tiger Gate The Monkey King (recently rewatched it and while the makers could've done so much more with the CGI, I don't mind it and now regard it as a great throwback to 1990s HK film CGI)
Member trueth Posted April 18, 2014 Member Share Posted April 18, 2014 I enjoyed the effects in Kung Fu Hustle
Member kungfusamurai Posted April 18, 2014 Member Share Posted April 18, 2014 Are you referring to the Zu from 1983? I don't recall there being any CGI. If anything, it was hand drawn animation effects. I thought House of Flying Daggers and Hero had good CGI. I think most of the martial arts movies in the last 10 to 15 years with big epic battle scenes have been using CGI.
Member yojimbo Posted April 18, 2014 Member Share Posted April 18, 2014 Zu was remade with Louis Koo and Cecila Cheung.

Member mark187 Posted April 18, 2014 Member Share Posted April 18, 2014 Mortal Kombat (for the time period, the effects were pretty good, and the story definitely requires them, so I think it's one of the best martial arts films to incorporate special effects) Tsui Hark films usually have better than average for HK films I agree with Kung Fu Hustle and DTG The Storm Warriors Shaolin Soccer (martial arts elements to this film, and special effects were great at the time, especially for HK)

Yeah, the 1983 film. CGI or visuals. The animation effects gave Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain good-looking visuals.
Moderator One Armed Boxer Posted April 19, 2014 Moderator Share Posted April 19, 2014 If we're not just limiting it to CGI, apart from what's already been mentioned then I'd go with - Battle Wizard (1977) Buddha's Palm (1982) Holy Flame of the Martial World (1983) Demon of the Lute (1983) A Man Called Hero (1999) The Duel (2000) Bichunmoo (2000) The Restless (2006) Detective Dee & the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010) Chinese Zodiac: CZ12 (2012) Young Detective Dee & the Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013) Some movies that missed the mark for me with visual effects were - Descendant of the Sun (1983) Avenging Fist (2001) Volcano High (2001) The Myth (2005)
