Lionsgate is producing a Bollywood remake of their 2011 MMA film WARRIOR.

Screen Daily

Inspired by Lionsgate’s 2011 North American release of the same name, the film tells the story of two estranged brothers and deals with their struggling relationship with each other and their father. The film will be adapted for Indian audiences and re-written for Indian tastes.

“Lionsgate is committed to identifying opportunities to produce and deliver motion pictures, television programming and other premium content to one of the largest and fastest-growing markets in the world,” said Lionsgate president of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution, Jim Packer.

Endemol India CEO Deepak Dhar said: “Action-filled and emotionally powerful with themes of forgiveness and the enduring bonds of family, Warrior will be a quality film made with top-of-the-line production values that we believe will strike a responsive chord with Indian audiences.”

Eyedentity Motion Pictures and Lionsgate are currently finalising cast for the film, which is scheduled to go into production in December 2014.

The partnership between Lionsgate and Endemol India was negotiated by Rohit Tiwari at Morris St. Advisors, Lionsgate’s agents in India.

Warrior is one of my more favorite films of late. It'll be interesting to see the Bollywood remake. Thanks for the story.

Update:

The film has an official title of BROTHERS and production has been completed. The film will be released on August 14.

Akshay Kumar will play Joel Edgerton's role while Sidharth Malhotra will play the Tom Hardy role. It looks like Jackie Shroff, who returned after a hiatus in DHOOM 3, will play the Nick Nolte role.

Here's the official poster

Conan Stevens and Ron Smoorenburg are also in the film as fighters. The team of Justin Yu, Eric Brown, and KFC indie favorites Vlad Rimburg and Emmanuel Manzanares worked as stunt/fight coordinators!

Brothers actually performed well in its native India. It was the biggest box-office opening for Akshay Kumar and was given rave reviews. Playing some of the MMA fighters in the tournament are:

  • Bloodsport sequel star Daniel Bernhardt (who is now an official member of the 87Eleven Stunt Team)
  • Ron Smoorenburg
  • Conan Stevens
  • Chan Griffin, a Chinese-Australian capoeirista who I saw in the recent reboot of Brian Trenchard-Smith's Turkey Shoot starring Dominic Purcell.
