Coming out on February 15 on Toei video, this will be the first film in Japan's history to focus solely on the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. The film received full backing from the Japanese branch of the ITF.

Three brothers are involved in a family conflict over which one of them will be heir to the family taekwondo dojo. One day, they accidentally wander into a mysterious forest where they’re confronted by waves of enemies which they must keep defeating with their taekwondo skills in order to escape.

The film was directed by Hideyuki Katsuki and stars Masahiro Inoue, Ryouma Baba (Super Sentai fans will know Baba as Blue Buster on Go-Busters), and Kyosuke Hamao (Super Sentai fans will know him as GoseiBlack on Goseiger (the original Japanese version of Power Rangers Megaforce)).

I actually saw the film last night and it wasn't actually as bad as it looked from the trailer. Granted, I saw the film with no subs, but here's what I learned the film was about.

Toshimichi is the son of a former national taekwondo champion who is now chosen to take over his father's small dojang once he decides to retire. Toshimichi has a brother, Shinpei, who was supposed to be the heir apparent but decided to leave the dojang to become a low-level gangster. When Toshimichi and best friend Ishiba gear up to train for an upcoming tournament, they, along with two of their friends end up in an accident that leaves them in a forest. When they awaken, the group finds themselves in constant battle against different types of villains. Magi, an elder friend of Toshimichi's family, tells the young fighter that this is considered the ultimate test. In order to leave the forest, he must fight on and on and keep winning or prepare for his soul to disappear. Yes that part is a bit farfetched, but it also involves Shinpei, as he fights within himself to do what's right and either stay as a gangster or continue his family's legacy of TKD fighters. So yes, there is a bit of Japanese craziness mixed in, but overall, it is not that bad of a film.

Lead actor Masahiro Inoue, best known for playing Kamen Rider Decade, is a black belt in ITF Taekwondo and the film had the full support of Japan's ITF branch. The film would also mark the final appearance of co-star Kyosuke Hamao (who played the Black Ranger in Tensou Sentai Goseiger). Hamao announced his retirement shortly before the film's release to pursue his dream of studying interior design in the United States. He currently lives in New York while studying and keeps to himself these days.
