White House Down director Roland Emmerich gave an update on the sequel to his 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day, from Dark Horizons:

Out doing promotional rounds for "White House Down," filmmaker Roland Emmerich confirms that Will Smith will NOT be returning for the upcoming "Independence Day" sequel.

Emmerich says: "Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much."

The filmmaker goes on to say: "We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new."

He adds that what they're doing is different than what you might expect: "We're not doing a total reboot, we're doing something that's totally unusual."

Screenwriter James Vanderbilt ("The Amazing Spider-Man," "Zodiac") is currently at work on a polish of Emmerich and Dean Devlin's script for the second film. 20th Century Fox is currently targeting a July 3rd 2015 release.

That right there comes off really weird to me. Too expensive? White House Down cost more to make than After Earth. Also, why in hell wouldn't you want a marquee name to open your picture esp. a sequel? Goldblum and Pullman do it for you instead?

Secret Executioner

Yeah, the first one was so much of a classic that it HAS to have a sequel... No Will Smith is good to me (I hate this guy) but considering how Emmerich shitted on Godzilla and its fans, I'm still not interested.

He probably wanted to put his son it too. And force him down people's throats like he's been doing. Could care less about Fresh Prince, his spoiled child, or this stupid sequel to a lame film.

A-freakin'-men about his son. Seems like Will Smith can't do a movie without having his kids in it...

Update on Independence Day 2

Jessie Usher, who co-starred in When the Game Stands Tall, has signed on for the lead role in the sequel. He will be playing Dylan, who will lead another anti-alien attack. Dylan is the step-son of Will Smith's character and son of Vivica A. Fox's character.

Speaking of Vivica A. Fox, she will be reprising her role in the sequel. Roland Emmerich himself confirmed it. She would be the second original cast member returning after Jeff Goldblum officially signed on to return with the possibility Bill Pullman may be returning as well. Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg are also joining the cast.

Shooting begins in May.

They always make excuses in showbiz. They don't want to create problems for themselves and the studios. When Darren Aaronofsky left The Wolverine. They claimed scheduling conflicts and such. When rumors had them parting ways due to control issues over the film. But they played nice and talked it all down. Why? Who know if they would need each other later.

Will Smith is probably too expensive. This is an undeniable fact. He probably would have wanted at least somewhere between $20 - $30 million and points off the profit. All this makes him more expensive than he is possibly worth these days in light of his recent bombs.

After Earth was made for less. But why did it happen? It is what Hollywood refers to as a vanity project. Something the studios wouldn't want to touch normally for one reason or another. However, someone with a big name (star, director, producer, etc) really want to make it. So what do you do to get it made? A lot are willing to take a big pay cut and work with a smaller budget. Along with other compromises.

Will Smith got After Earth made by accepting a smaller salary and promised to make MIB 3 for Sony. In return Sony makes After Earth and accepts the fact that Jayden Smith will be co-starring. Otherwise, they wouldn't have touched it, much less cast Jayden to be in it in any way.

Original ID4 stars Bill Pullman and Brett Spiner are officially returning. This now makes one wonders what happened to the latter's character.

And it has been confirmed that Liam Hemsworth will be playing Pullman's son-in-law.

Maika Monroe (It Follows) has joined the cast in an unspecified role.
