Garo: The One to Light the Darkness

Hey guys,

I'm starting to watch this new series from Japan. It is the third of a line of series, aimed for adults, that combine horror and martial arts action.

GARO is about a chosen Makai Knight who becomes an armored hero complete with a wolf-shaped mask (Garo means "fanged wolf" in Japanese) who tracks down creatures known as the Horrors.

This third series features Wataru Kuriyama as Ryuga Dougai, the chosen Makai Knight. He enters a city called VolCity (because the city was built around a volcano) and he tracks down the Horrors. He gets help from two mysterious warriors who are also Makai Knights, played by Tsunenori Aoki and Junya Ikeda (who for you Super Sentai fans, played GokaiSilver). While Ryuga can become Garo, the other two can become Gai the Sky Bow Knight and Zen the Flame Sword Knight respectively.

The action choreography is done by Makoto Yokoyama of Alpha Stunts. Here's a trailer for the series. I have the first 3 episodes so far, they were fansubbed at TV Nihon...at 1:35, I think I saw Yasuaki Kurata!!!

This tv show was really bad but the action scenes were surprisingly good for a japanese tv show. This is my favorite fight in the whole show with Kurata kicking their asses left and right.

A Garo show with good acting, much better cinematography, a good script and good sfx would be really fucking awesome because the art design is top notch.

Takayuki Takeya, Keita Amemiya and Yasushi Nirasawa are very talented artists.

Having just found this place, I love it, but it's so sad to see how unpopular tokusatsu is around here. Seriously, for the longest time I thought the only representations of Japanese style choreography was limited to Versus and Kamen Rider.

The first two seasons of Garo are excellent. The One Who Shines in the Darkness, while it had a few good fight sequences, is generally considered the weakest of the series largely because of it's heavy use of CG. Give Garo proper and Garo: Makai Senki a chance. You can find them at TV-Nihon.

Ah man it bums me out so much that Yami o Terasu Mono was your first experience with Garo!!! The first two seasons are legendary, the two most recent ones not so much.

Even more Garo release in 2018 - Garo: Red Requiem gets a Blu-ray release from Section23 Films on April 10, 2018, running time 97 minutes.  This was released theatrically in Japan in 2010.  "In the ancient war against the monstrous creatures known as Horrors, many Makai Priestesses have fought and died in battle, yet no woman has ever been chosen to wear the mystic armor of the Makai Knights. Kouga, the current bearer of the gold wolf armor Garo, doesn't believe it's even possible, but when his quest to destroy the Horror Karma thrusts him into conflict alongside the fiery Priestess Rekka, he's forced to acknowledge that the female is often the deadlier of the species! Because Rekka has a personal score to settle with Karma, and she's determined to destroy that Horror herself! It will be all Kouga and his Mado Ring Zaruba can do to keep the three of them alive long enough to do it in the GARO universe's first spectacular feature film - GARO: RED REQUIEM!"

Garou Special : Beast of the Demon Night, a two-part mini-series that premiered at the end of 2006, gets a Blu-ray release on June 26, 2018 from Section23 Films, running time 100 minutes.  "A soul-stealing-plant, a nightmare forest and ancient master horror are just a few of the deadly challenges that Kouga Saezima must face when a young Makai Priestess interrupts his new assignment with the news that the deceased Priest Amon wishes to speak with him from the other side.  Even more shocking is the revelation that Kouga's childhood friend Jabbi isn't dead as has long been believed, with her body having been absorbed into a plantlike being called the Makai Tree.  Now it's a race against time as the golden knight Garo must save Jabbi and join forces with Rei, the silver knight Zero, to defeat the newly resurrected Horror Lord Legules... and if they fail, the entire world will be plunged into eternal darkness."  News from  http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2018/02/23/june-2018-blu-ray-and-dvd-releases-from-section23-films/
