Member Takuma Posted April 4, 2013 Member Share Posted April 4, 2013 I've been dying to see this before filming even began. Trailer: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/hot-trailer-only-god-forgives-red-band-223806044.html From Nicolas Winding Refn, whose previous film Drive (2011) is cinematic perfection and the best film of the decade so far. Member Gaijin84 Posted April 7, 2013 Member Share Posted April 7, 2013 I'm psyched to see any film set in Bangkok that isn't Hangover 2. Refn will treat it with respect, hopefully.

Member Takuma Posted May 22, 2013 Author Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 Finnish film reporter reports back from Cannes: Refn's most beautiful and horrifying film. Plenty of neonlights. Gosling only has about 17 lines of dialogue. Far, far more violent than Drive. Some of the audience loved it, many are so upset (over the violence, apparently) that they are enraged. Moderator Karlos Posted May 22, 2013 Moderator Share Posted May 22, 2013 Good ol’ Cannes. It wouldn’t be the same without people storming out of screenings, aghast at what they saw. Poor dears. Here’s some early reviews (may contain SPOILERS): http://www.totalfilm.com/news/only-god-forgives-reaction-cannes-2013 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/karin-badt/cannes-2013-ryan-gosling_b_3318449.html http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/moviesnow/la-et-mn-cannes-nicolas-refn-only-god-forgives-ryan-gosling-20130519,0,569239.story http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/reviews/cannes-film-festival-2013-review-only-god-forgives-review--ryan-gosling-and-nicolas-winding-refn-reunite-for-this-underwhelming-revenge-thriller-8627248.html
Member OpiumKungFuCracker Posted May 22, 2013 Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 You storm out of a movie because of it being ultra violent, lol... Stupid presses/ what the fuck were they expecting from a filmmaker of this caliber??? This shit ain't suppose to be soft, this suppose to hit harder than TIger Woods swinging a golf club at the masters.
Member TibetanWhiteCrane Posted May 22, 2013 Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 Or swinging his dong at a skeezy pornstar..... but enough about golf. I know a few people who was in Refn's Pusher trilogy, they said he was weird as fuck, but brilliant.
Member sifu iron perm Posted May 22, 2013 Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 same ol' cannes.. 17 lines of dialogue, is this a continuation of his Driver character?
Member Gaijin84 Posted May 22, 2013 Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 Or swinging his dong at a skeezy pornstar..... but enough about golf. Haaaaaaaa - nice one. I know a few people who was in Refn's Pusher trilogy, they said he was weird as fuck, but brilliant. His Pusher trilogy is fantastic - introduced me to Mads Mikkelsen and how awesome he could be as well.
Member sifu iron perm Posted May 22, 2013 Member Share Posted May 22, 2013 The Pusher trilogy is madly underrated. Some crazy scenes in the 1st and 2nd instalments. Milo makes an appearance in the shitty remake version of Pusher, fuckin' awful.
Member Takuma Posted June 6, 2013 Author Member Share Posted June 6, 2013 Rated 16 in France, lowered to 12 after distributor complaint. Gonna take forever till I get to see this, though. JP release set for 2014
Member derwood Posted July 19, 2013 Member Share Posted July 19, 2013 Gonna take forever till I get to see this, though. JP release set for 2014 that is why the internet is so great I highly enjoyed this WAAAAYYYY more arty than Drive, but I dig it. He's got the Lynch factor going now Thought it would be more violent after those reactions from Cannes, but then again, they're a bunch of pansies Come a long way since The Pusher, but has kept the ability to bring out the best in his cast

Administrator KUNG FU BOB Posted July 19, 2013 Administrator Share Posted July 19, 2013 My son and I are bummed out. They will not be showing this in Philly! Pittsburgh gets it, but not Philly?! Weird... and disappointing. We're both big fans of DRIVE, and he borrowed the PUSHER trilogy from me- which I haven't watched yet- and said it's great. I'm a big fan of that film as well. I'm getting the feeling it will not be playing near me either (Modesto CA). I hope it does, but so far no go (our art theater can sometimes get something a few months later though).
Member OpiumKungFuCracker Posted July 19, 2013 Member Share Posted July 19, 2013 Guys it's already on torrent, hd quality you might as well go watch it like that.. Blame it On Cannes if you have to watch it through a torrent file...
Administrator KUNG FU BOB Posted July 19, 2013 Administrator Share Posted July 19, 2013 Have you seen Refn's Bronson? I'm a big fan of that film as well. Yes, we both thought that was quite good. I believe Karlos was the one that first put that film on my radar. I'm getting the feeling it will not be playing near me either (Modesto CA). I hope it does, but so far no go (our art theater can sometimes get something a few months later though). Here's the info my son gave me: TOMORROW. Member BaronK Posted July 20, 2013 Member Share Posted July 20, 2013 I don't compare it to Drive. When I saw the trailer I saw it but this movie didn't feel like Drive to me. I don't care for it at all. It is arty. For the situations presented, there was no suspense or fear put into the viewer. It was all kind of there. Lack of dialog didn't have an impact on the picture but some things needed to be told to us. That was a film making choice that I did not like. Lots of interpretation that doesn't make sense and is never fleshed. It's like he was being arty to be arty. I didn't get the ending in any way, shape, or form. What was that? Member derwood Posted July 20, 2013 Member Share Posted July 20, 2013 as BaronK mentioned, its waaaayyyy more arty than Drive I still enjoyed it, but it was a bit trippy. Some scenes you either get or you dont Goslings character suffers a mental illness...thats about all I can gather from the ending
