Princess and the Seven Kung Fu Masters...

Love him or hate him, Wong Jing is still directing wacky comedies and this year sees his latest one, "Princess and the Seven Kung Fu Masters."

It stars Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah but also features Dennis To, Jiang Lu-Xia, Eric Tsang and Philip Ng.

It also features Philip Kwok on choreography duties!

Considering the bevy of recognizable names, the trailer makes the film look utterly insane. It seems this is a straight up goof-fest, heavy on elements of spoof...

watched this last night apart from the silly slapstick comedy and odd dodgy wirework on the non martial artists there is some good fight action in this only slightly over edited at times, , you have philip ng doing his bruce bit all dressed in white, Jiang Lu-Xia using a rope dart, Dennis To doing some decent polework (good to see his weapons has improved since legend is born) a man using tonfas and Xing Yu doing eagle claw and having iron feet -(looks like a homage to sun chien) , samo doesnt really do anything here worth mentioning , quite enjoyable fight action wise.

Don't ask why, but I decided to watch this movie as a double-bill along with 'Ip Man: The Final Fight'. Well, it has something to do with the fact I was stuck on a 9 hour flight with very little HK movies to choose from, and I also noticed that both movies share a lot of the same cast - Eric Tsang, Dennis To, Jiang Lu Xia, Timmy Hung, Rose Chan, & Wong Cho Lam.

While 'Ip Man: Final Fight' is certainly the more kung-fu orientated of the two, 'Princess & the Seven Kung-Fu Masters' actually manages to cram in more martial arts talent in the form of legends Sammo Hung, Yuen Wah, Bruce Leung, & new blood Xing Yu & Philip Ng.

This is of course a Wong Jing comedy though, which means that kung-fu isn't so much the order of the day as much as insane / inane (depending on your viewpoint) scenes of HK hilarity. Thankfully a decent portion of the comedy is actually funny, with enough off-the-wall wackiness and 'Kung-Fu Hustle'-esque hijinks to make the run-time pass pleasantly enough.

There is actually some decent action as well - Philip Ng takes on a group of 'bronze men' in a humourous scene, Dennis To takes on Xing Yu with steel boots, Timmy Hung goes against Jiang Lu Xia armed a rope dart, and there's some nice ninja action thrown in to top things off.

While it's not going to win any awards, 'Princess & Seven Kung-fu Masters' does exactly what's expected of it - serves as a nice throwback to HK's wacky comedy days, with a welcome dose of action thrown in.
